MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago A and P. Society Avas held in the society’s board room yesterday and attended by Messrs \V. 0. M'Kellar (president, in the chair), A. King, E. M. North, H. Turner, A. M‘Kay, 1). J. Ross, J. JVimnio, George Ross, A. Johnson, J. Heilyer, John Young, and E.' 0. ilazlett.

Before proceeding with the business the President referred to the death of Mr A. J. Keith, of Ashburton, a member of the society for many years, a prominent exhibitor, and one Avhose services as judge were repeatedly availed of, and moved—That this meeting places on its regret at the death of Mr A. J. Keith, and desires to extend to his family its sincere sympathies in their bereavement.” —The motion Avas carried in the usual manner.

On the motion of Mr hi. Turner, seconded by Mr D. J. Ross, the Finance Committee’s report that accounts amounting to £3-13 12s 3d bo passed for payment Avas approved. Mr M’Kcllar reported that a meeting of the special sub-committee appointed to consider Avhat action should be taken to meet the loss incurred at the Slimmer Shoiv through unfavorable AA T cathcr, and also Avhat stops should be taken to ensure better competition in the various sections, had been held that morning, and the various proposals submitted Avere carefully considered. —After the various proposals had been discussed, it was decided to adjourn the meeting until February 10. The committee expressed the hope that a full report Avould be submitted for the consideration of the General Committee at the next meeting. The annual ram and ewe fair was fixed for Thursday, March 20, and it Avas decided that breeders and vendors must state the name of the breeder Avhen entering their sheep for sale. 'The horse parade Avas fixed for Thursday, September 27, and it Avas decided to hold oi'cr the fixture of the Winter Show dates until next meeting. The Secretary pointed out that the Jockey Club’s races Avould bo held on Juno 2, 4, and 6, and suggested that the Winter Slioav should open on Saturday, June 2, and continue until Thursday, June 7.

Tho Dunedin Fanciers’ Club wrote applying for the lease of Brydone Hall for June 14 and 15, which was held over until tho dates of the Winter Show had been definitely fixed.

The following suggested competition.' were received and were referred to the Cattle and Sheep Committees for thcii consideration :—Pirst prise of LL’O, foi best bullock under thirty months, tin prise bullock to become the properly of the society, and, it suitable, used for a guessing competition; a prize of Til) for tbc best four wethers most suitable for the frozen meat trade. The New /oaland and .Australian Land Company, Hampden, wrote returning a cheque ol Ltd lOs prize money gained at the last Summer Show, as a contribution to the society. Mr D. AVindlo also wrote returning his cheque of ,'ls towards judges’ expenses as a donation to the. society,— On the motion of Mr E. C. Hazlett, a vote of thanks was accorded the New Zealand and Australian Land Company and Mr D. AVindlo for their generosity. The .Dunedin Dairymen’s Association wrote expressing the committee’s sympathy with the society in the serious loss incurred at the Summer Show, and advising that it was willing to pay £o as a first prize in this class.—'the secretary was instructed to acknowledge the letter and to thank the, Dunedin Dairymen’s Association for their contribution. Air Peter AValker (Palmerston) wrote complaining that two outsiders had been secured to judge one class in the Ayrshire section owing to the judge who was officiating being interested in one of tlio animals some time ago. Mr Walker considered that exhibitors should be consulted before an appointment was made.—The matter was dealt with by the executive, which advised Mr AAhiiker that the judge of the. Ayrshire cattle had reported that lie had owned one of the animals some time ago, and preferred that someone else should he selected to judge that particular class. The two men were selected, and it was reported that the animals were practically placed in the same position ns if Mr Weir had acted. The executive's reply was approved. The Now Zealand Friesian Association wrote regretting that it could not award a, gold medal for most points owing to the association not having received the required number of entries.
