WAYWARD’S SIXTH-WIN. [By St. Clair.] WELLINGTON, January 25. Another sultry, hot day and a very hard, fast track favored the final clay at the Wellington Cup Meeting, for which the attendance, considering it was an off clay, was good. The Summer 'Handicap produced one of the best betfcinj races of the meeting, and in » sterling finish Goshawk, who won,

was well ImmlVjd by T. Metcalf. Set Sail ran another good race, and rtainly had a chance at the, distance post, v'here she commenced her but before getting clear of her field she was badly squeeired-out, and that quickly settled her chance. Top pace w, on nil the way, and it was a great eiioi to concede the.poundage she was giving away and finish so close up on such a fast' run race. * * * * Wayward was allowed to pay a false price when he won the Melrose Handicap, but he was lucky, as Spean Bridge got badly interfered with five furlongs from home. **~ * ♦ The Consolation Handicap produced a fine race, and Hynannn, who won this race last year, put up a great performance in winning again, making a track record, and conceding a stone and over to all the other starters. nr * * Money Order won the City Handicap well, and put up the best time for six furlongs for the meeting. K * * ♦ With Greengrocer, Amorist, and Rotowhero withdrawn from the Wallaccville High-weight Handicap a field of seven was left in._ and First Sight was well hacked, ijjth Historic and Stargnd the best supported of the others. With a. moving-in start die favorite gob away on terms with his field. Mandarine led Flying Shot. Grecnclnth, and First Shot out of the harrier and to the far turn, where Rrcencloth van to the front, ami led Flying Shot, Mandarine, • -1 the. favorite round the far turn and across the top. The favorite was outside of those leaders when they turned into the straight, and, taking charge at t’ distance, ran home an easy winner h- over two lengths from Historic, who bent Star Oorl by half a length. Greenclnth and Mandarine were next. Investments, £6.910,1.

Jti the Keibnrn Hack Handicap A dkiwai carried nearly twice ns many investments as Greengrocer, who was nuicli betcr backed _ than Polydcctcs. From another walking-in start Polydcctcs was Hie first to show out. and bo led Some Lad along the hack and to the far turn, Arikiwai, Greengrocer. and Twink running in lino behind them. Some Lad joined Polvdectes raring across the top, and they led the favorite and Capitulation into Hm straight. Then Arikiwai ran past t,l •• loaders, but, was challenged by Greengrocer inside the distance post, and the latter led the favorite home by a length. Only Shot Silk was withdrawn from the Hopeful Stakes, for which the coupled pair, Concentrate and Royal Duke, was made nearly a much better favorite than Flying Hero, with Flicker, Full Feather, and the other bracket, Banket and Baskier, next in demand. Flying Hero, on the outside o f the line, was troublesome at the barrier, and was badly loft when the barrier rose. Flicker, Banker, Moorgas. Stanchion, Pari, and Royal Duke ai eared to be the early leaders, and ;,t the turn for home Moorgas and Flicker were with Banket, and just in front of Full Feather, Briar Root, Duinblane. and Royal Duke. Kahu Ariki at once took charge, and was. three lengths in front of Wayward as they raced round the far turn, where Spean Bridge got into trouble and dropped back last. Wayward followed Kalin Ariki into the straight, and, running up to him at the distance post, bad his measure, but over the last 100yds bad to be ridden out to beat Spean Bridge by a length. Veriigcrn was the onlv withdrawal from the Summer Handicap, which provided a great betting race, the Aucklander, In the Shade, being established just a better favorite than Joy King, who was just a little hotter backed than Duke Abbey, Paperchase, and Sot Sail, vith Lady Lirnond and Goshawk also well supported. From a good line ibo favorite, Nincompoop, and Duke Abbey were slow to move, and Joy King and Paperchase led out from Goshawk. Alter going a furlong Paperchase and Goshawk led .Joy King, Set Sail, and In the Shade, and there was no change racing round the far turn nor across the top. At the turn into the straight Goshawk was almost on even terms with Paperchase, with Joy King going very well just on the outside of them. Goshawk appeared to have Papercbase’s measure at the distance post, where Joy King was still going well, and Set Sail tried to get through but was bumped by Lady Limond. In the race to the post Goshawk stayed on well and beat Joy King by half a length. Paperchase, who was made too much use of, was a short neck away, third, with Alyson, Sot Sail, and Lady Lirnond together about two lengths away. Investments, £B,IOB.

9 * ¥ ¥ All siiirted in the Consohii ion Handicap, and in a good betting race Doree was made a better favorite than Hynanna, with Overhaul nearly as well hacked. Day out of the straight, where Overhaul appeared to strike trouble and entered the back stretch nearly last. As they raced up the back stretch Front Rank was showing the way to Gala Day, Doree, and Thorndalc, and racing across the top Front. Rank and Gala Day were together two lengths in front of Doree and Thorndale, with Hynnnna well back. Front Rank and Gala Day led Thorndale, Doree, and Hynanna into the straight, where the favorite dropped out. At the distance post Thorndale headed Front Rank and was challenged by Hynanna, and the pair fought nut a great finish, the latter gaining a head victory in the last time of 2min Hsec — a track record.
