HAD HER “FLING"

GIRL'S LIFE CF FOLLY TRAINING AS A VOCALIST. The pretty young daughter of an American doctor, who, having inherited a largo ruio of money, was alleged to have thrown off ail restraints and determined to have her “ fling,” appeared in the dock at AlaryJabone. Described as Ellen M'Cord, aged twentythree, a vocalist, she was charged with stealing a marked half-crown belonging to a fcllow-giucst at a boarding house in .Sutherland avenue, Maida Vale, She was also accused under the Aliens’ Order of failing to notify the police of her change of address. The girl’s foster-mother, Mrs Palmer Shepherd, of Eltham, Kent, told the magistrate that Ellen’s mother, who was a Dane, died in 1920 in her native country. It was her dying wish that Ellen should live with Mrs Shepherd and should know nothing of the inheritance until she became of age. The girl was told of the legacy in July last year. She at once left Eltham, saying that she would have her own way.

The Magistrate; Would you be willing to look after her? —I bitterly regret that, it is utterly impossible owing to the girl's own altitude. She will not allow me. Detective Parker stated that when the girl left Eltham it was ostensibly to return to Denmark, but in fact she moved to various parts of London and the provinces without informing the pohee. So far as the police could discover she had been studying under a professor to become a singer, and had earned her living as a vocalist nnd a domestic servant. She was discharged from a place at Gower street because money bad been missed. The magistrate (Mr Boyd) told (he girl that she was liable to be sentenced and deported, but he was anxious that she should not, through her own folly, wreck her whole career. He remanded her in custody so that she could think over her position. The girl said that she had been asked to sing at the Scala Theatre in 'November, and asked that she might bo allowed to attend the rehearsals. Mr Boyd replied that the missionary would speak to him about it.
