NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lindsay’s Second jßecord

—————— W. Cameron’s Great 100yds. Intermediate Dive to Otago With D. P, Lindsay and W. Cameron both in record-breaking vein, last night’s session of the New Zealand national swimming and diving championships provided further fine swimming, and with three diving championships being decided the usual crowd of about 1,000 spectators had a good night of aquatic enjoyment, though the programme, as the result of the inclusion of two water polo matches, proved a bit drawn out at the finish.

D. P. Lindsay is worth his weight m gold to Canterbury, and by setting new marks almost every time he leaves the board he is strengthening his claims lor Olympic selection. Prior to last mgnt he already held the New Zealand iresh water record of llinin 54 3-ssec, and the salt water figures of 11mm 2o 3-osec for 880yds, and by covering the distance in llinin 45 4-ssec Lindsay retained his national men’s title and established Ids second fresh water record during the meeting. He swam at a fairly even pace throughout, and won without being pushed by 35yds, the consistent Canterburian, A. T. F. Stokes following him home, with Otago’s representative, C. J. EM’Lcan, in third place. In distances over 100yds W. Cameron is not really at his best, but last night the powerful Wellingtonian gave a real taste of his quality in the 100yds intermediate boys’ championship, which he carried off in easy fashion in 60 3-sseCj which smashed N. Dowsett’s fresh water record by 3-sscc, though his own salt water record is Olsec. Cameron has done 59 2-sscc in salt water, but last night’s swim was one of the best of his career, for he was not challenged and forced things all the way. Wellington also took the honors or the 220yds junior boys’ championship, B Gallate collecting his title in 3mm 4 l-ssec, which will probably stand as a New Zealand fresh water record. Though Gallato’s time is a good deal below L. Olds’s salt water record of 2min 43 l-ssec, the Wellington lad is a swimmer well above tho ordinary run with a powerful stroke and good leg action. _ r . After a good race Miss M. bniith (Auckland) turned the tables on Miss Z. Howarth (Wanganui) in the 100yds junior girls’ championship, the winner s time of 78 l-osec shattering the existing fresh water mark by one second. Miss Smith swam with an easy stroke all the way, but Miss Howarth making heavy weather of it in the last k'lfthc absence of E. O. Heard the 99Qyds national men s breast-stroke championship resolved itself into a duel between the Aucklander, N. K. Sylow, who bails originally from Queensland, and L. Smith, of Wanganui, and the stylish Auckland exponent gradually wore Smith down to win m 3nnn 6scc, which was but 1 1-osoe outside of Hoard’s fresh water record. Had the title holder swam in the final it is \ e y doubtful if bo would have been capable of heading Sylow. . The intermediate boys diving championship comes to Otago for the first time as the result of the success or A. M. Rix, who gave a fairly consistent display, though the standard in tins event generally speaking, was low Rix has improved, Ins carriage and flight being a good deal better, his entry requires to be more polished. Miss Edna Champion had a comfortable victory in the --oyds intermediate girls’ championship_ in 2mi,i 59 3-ssec, which was fast time under the circumstances. She used a fan y fast stroke throughout, the issue bem 0 beyond doubt after 100yds had been to ßotVtho ladies’ and men’s national diving championships were commenced, and these will be concluded on Friday night. In tho former Miss L. Flood (Hawke’s Bay), the title holder, gave a splendid display in the compulsones, and looks to have bright prospects oi retaining her title, while Miss D. Foote, of Otago, also performed well. Ino men’s title event looks to he between R. 0. Calder and H. E ; alkcr ) ot Otago, and W. Hicks, of Wellington, and, though the title holder lost points through overbalancing in a back someisault, ho practically made up the lost ground in the other dives. During the evening Miss Ena stockley attempted to lower the 100 metres New Zealand ladies’ record backstroke of Ira in 40 2-nsec, previously held by Miss L. Stockley, and paced by the men’s national backstroke she covered the distance in Imin 27 4-osec. The time was remarkably fast, but was not a world’s record as was erroneously announced, this being Imin 2 2 2-ssec, to the credit of the tall Miss S. Baem, which has stood since 1922. Otago secured another draw at water polo against Canterbury B, and the undefeated Canterbury A team beat Auckland fairly comfortably. Too much undue rough play was allowed in both crames. ° In the absence of Mr C. W. Bryant Mr D. Coulter was appointed starter by the New Zealand Council for some unaccountable reason, the assistantstarter (Mr W. Jenkins) being passed over. The Otago Centre was not consulted in the matter, and, in view of the fact that Mr Jenkins was approved by the council as assistant, starter, his passing over seems hard to explain. Mr Coulter’s starting was not up to the mark set by Mr Bryant, and in the junior girls’ 100yds championship the field was allowed to proceed after getting away early. Canterbury leads for the Yaldhurst Shield (national championships) with 25 points, Auckland has 15, Otago 11. Wanganui 8, and 'Wellington 1. Wellington has 4 points for the War Memorial Shield (intermediates and juniors), Wanganui 3, Auckland 3, Otago 2, and Hawke’s Bay 1. Polo points are:—Canterbury A 3, Wellington I|, Otago 1, Auckland 1, and Canterbury B 1. Results: — BSOYOS MEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Holder of title, D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury). World’s record, Arne Borg . (Sweden), lOmin 37 2-ssec. New Zealand fresh water record, D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury), llmin 54 3-ssec. Standard time. 12min 36sec.

the 220yds mark was 7yds in front of Stokes, who also was moving steadily. M’Lean was in third place ahead of Pelham and Claridgo. There was no alteration in the positions until 300yds was covered, Lindsay increasing his lead to 12yds from Stokes, M’Lean be-

D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury) ... 1 A. T. F. Stokes (Canterbury) ... ‘2 C J. E. M'Lean (Otago) 3 Also started: C. Claridge (Wellington) and R. Pelham (Wellington). Had Lindsay been pushed he would have been capable of even faster time than the record he established. Lindsay showed from the plunge that he was out to lower his own record, and with only two lengths covered led Stokes by 3yds, M'Lean being just a shade ahead of Pelham a yard behind the leading pair. Lindsay left the 100yds behind in 65 4-ssec, and at the end' of four lengths Stokes was syds back, M'Lean being just ahead of Pelham, who was using the trudge. Lindsay was swimming very easily, and at

ing third, while Claridge withdrew at the end of the Jap. With half the distance reached Lindsay swam the same smooth, long stroke 15yds ahead of Stokes, his time for 440yds being smm 38 2-osec. Over tho second half of the journey tho same regular pace was maintained, Pelham withdrawing after sixteen 'lengths had been covered. Lindsay increased Ids lead further, and eventually won by 35yds from Stokes. M’Lean stuck to his task doggedly, and collected third points for Otago 30yds further back. Time, llmin 45 4-ssec. Lindsay’s sectional times were: 100yds, 65 4-ssec; 200yds, 2min 19 2-sscc; 300yds, 3min 44 2-ssecj 400yds, smin G 2-3 soc; 440yds, smin 38 2-ssec; 500yds, Grain 30sec; 600yds, 7min 52sec; 700yds, 9inin losec; 880yds, llmin 45 4-sscc. 220YDS MEN'S NATIONAL BREASTSTROKE

CHAMPIONSHIP Holder of title, E. C. Hoard (Canterbury). New Zealand fresh water record, E. C. Heard (Canterbury), 3inin 4 4-sscc. Standard time, 3min 15scc. N K. Sylow (Auckland) 1 L Smith Wanganui) 2 H. M. Clark (Otago) 3 E. C. Hoard, who qualified in his heat, did not start in the final.

This was a great race, last time being returned. Sylow, who is a very pretty breast stroke swimmer, keeping his shoulders well out of the water, ed from the start, and turned a fracdou ahead of Smith, who swims lower down and has a powerful kick, Clark icing a yard hack. The order was mehauged at the second turn, but Smith was half a yard ahead of Syow with the 100yds gone in 78 2-ssoc, Jlark being several yards back. The iair were neck and neck in the fourth length, the position being maintained until the sixth Jap was entered upon, when Sylow commenced to spurt, Smith being unable to respond. The Aucklander gradually drew away and won by 3yds, Clark being 12yds back third. Time, 3min 6scc. MEN'S N.Z. NATIONAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST STAGE, holder of title, R. C. Cakler (Otago). The competitors were: R. C. Calder (Otago), H. E. Walker (Otago), C. R. Eiordan (Canterbury), T. W. Thomson (Canterbury), W. Hicks (Wellington), G. Tipler (Canterbury), G. Geddes (Hawke’s Bay). The first stage comprised the compulsory dives in which a very fair standard was shown. Calder had the worst of luck, losing his balance in the back somersault (10ft board), and thus losing all points for this . dive. Nevertheless he picked them up in his full twist and back pike, but in the first stage Walker would probably lead the champion by a small margin. Walker dived consistently, his flight being fair, though his entry was not polished, as he could not point his toes.

In his full screw he screwed off the board, this being a fault noticeable in all but Calder. Hicks showed very fair form, and Riordan dived well, though the others were hardly up to championship standard. LADIES' N.Z. NATIONAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST STAGE. Holder of title: Miss L. Hood (Hawke’s Bay). The competitors were Misses L. Hood (Hawke’s Bay), D. Footo (Otago), J. Eggers (Otago), L. Copplestone), Canterbury), and Mrs M. E. Thomson. Several of the diver's showed good form in the compulsories, though Miss Hood gave much more finished a display than any of the others, the best of whom was probably the Otago girl, Miss Footo, who did a very fair running pike off tho 10ft hoard. Muss Hood’s Right was good, her entry being neat, with toes pointed. Her halfborer was a long way ahead of that of any of the others. Miss Copplestone was disappointing, and showed lack of confidence. Her flight in some cases was fair enough, but her entry was poor. Mrs Thomson gave a fair display, but Miss Eggers was a long way below championship requirements, being unable to do the dives. 220YDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIP Holder of Title: Miss M. Simmonds (Hawke’s Bay). New Zealand salt-water record, Miss K. Miller (Otago), 2min 57 2-ssec. Standard time, 3min 6sec. Miss E. Champion (Auckland) ... 1 Miss N. Stratton (Wanganui) ... 2 Tho only starters. Miss Stratton got a good starting dive and at i-hc end of a length touched just ahead ot Miss Champion, though both were swimming well. Tho pair turned together at the end of two Icughs, but Miss Champion was swimming much more easily, Miss Stratton beginning to labor. The 100yds was Iclt behind in 75 l-osec, and at tho end of another length Miss Champion was leading by 4yds. Miss was rolling and her stroke shortened, Miss Champion increasing her lead to win by 15yds. Time, 2min 59 3-ssec. 100YDS INTERMEDIATE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP New Zealand fresh-water record, N. Dowsett (Wanganui), 61 l-ssec. Standard time, 64scc.

by half a yard from the Canterbury man, Fairgray being a yard back third, just ahead of Dowsett. Fairgray was swimming strongly, and went ahead in the next length, remaining in front to win by 2yds, Dowsett being third 3yds back. Time, 2min 42 l-ssec.

tOOYDS LADIES' IHTERCLUB HANDICAP Miss K. Miller (Otago), scr 1 Miss L. Copplestone (Canterbury), Ssec 2 ‘Miss H. Ellis (Canterbury), lOsec ... 3 Only starters. Miss Copplestone was ahead at the 66 2-3yds mark, but Miss Miller, who had gradually drawn up, challenged strongly, and won comfortably _by 3yds, Miss Ellis being oyds back third. Time, 70 l-ssec. WATER POLO Canterbury A 5, Auckland 1. Canterbury A maintained its unbeaten record by defeating Auckland by 5 goals to 1 after a game that was more even than the scores would indicate, though Auckland appeared keener on playing the man than the ball. Canterbury had the superior throwers, and possessed better combination, though only one goal was added in the second spell. For Canterbury Stokes scored two goals, Mcikle two, and Atkinson one, while Enwright scored for Auckland.

First heat: H. Gowan (Wanganui) 1, R. Brownlee (Auckland) 2, R. Sutherland (South Canterbury) 3. Gowan swam easily, and leading from tho start he increased his advantage at every turn to win by 3yds from Brownlee, Sutherland being third, 4yds back. Time, 68 3-ssec. Second heat: W. Cameron (Wellington) 1, E. Woods (Canterbury) 2, J. Eaton (South Canterbury) 3. Also started: O. Holland (Otago). Cameron sot out as if ho meant to give the existing rocoird a fright. Swimming with his usual powerful stroke, Cameron showed the field a gap of 2yds at tho first turn, Woods being second, with Eaton just behind and Holland well back. Cameron increased his lead at the second turn, but eased up over the last 10yds, in which he swam against the ropes, but won by syds, AVoods finishing 3yds ahead of Eaton. Time, 61 l-ssec—equalling the New Zealand fresh-water record. FINAL. AV. Cameron (Wellington) 1 E. AVoods (Canterbury) 2 R. Brownlee (Auckland) 3 Other starters: R. Sutherland (South Canterbury), 11. Gowan (AA 7nganui), and J. Eaton (South Canterbury). From a good starting dive Cameron carved his "'ay through the water at a great bat, getting a long pull and touching the first time 3yds ahead of Gowan, with AVoods. who_ had a much shorter arm stroke, in third place. At the second turn Cameron was still moving strongly and though he was unable to maintain the pace to the finish ho won by Byds from AVoods, who finished well, (Brownlee being third, 3yds further back. Time, 60 S-usec. INTERMEDIATE BOYS' DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP A. M. Rix (Otago) 1

The teams were: Auckland. —L. Fairgray, Hodges, N. K. Svlow, A- Meikle, Kenny, J. P. Farrell, and J. Fnweight. Canterbury A.—T. Champion, C. Atkinson, E. C. Heard, J. M. Bales, A. T. F. Stokes. M. Meikle, and It. W. Wheolcy. Otago 2, Canterbury B 2. Otago felt the loss of C. B. Lewis through illness, and, though the homo side led by goals to 0 at half-time, Canterbury infused more dash into their play in the second spell, and notched a couple of goals. Otago’s throwing lacked power, and too often Canterbury were left absolutely unmarked. It was not as fast a game as that with Wellington. Goals for Otago were scored by Pithio and Harrod. Sutherland and Rattray scored for Canterbury. Teams;— < Otago.—J. Swan, A. Harrod, G. Standring, 11. C. Calder, L. Pithio, W. P. Boyd, and A. Knights. Canterbury B.~C. R. Riordan, H. G. Smith, C. W. Smith, W. Sutherland, L. J. Moorhouse, Laurie, and H. Rattray. VISITORS ENTERTAINED Yesterday the visiting swimmers Inspected the New Zealand Paper Mills, and in the afternoon the intermediates and juniors were entertained at afternoon tea at the Strand by tho Otago Centro. To-night is an off night, and will be occupied with a burlesque carnival at the Municipal Baths.

J. Kemp (Hawke’s Bay) 2 J. M’Kee (Hawke's Bay) 3 Also competed: B. Howarth (AA Tanganui). The standard all round was a poor one. The .second stage was not contested last night, the post dives being a running header off the low board and a one and a-half somersaults from tho 10ft board, which none of the competitors executed properly. Rix' did an Islander running (off one foot) from both boards for his voluntaries, and secured more points than tho others, who chose loss difficult pike dives. Rix's flight entries were both fair, but his toes flicked the water. tOOYDS JUNIOR GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP Miss M. Smith (Auckland) . 1 Miss Z. Howarth (AVanganui) ... 2 Miss D. Murdoch (Otago) 3 Also started: Misses E. Morrison (South Cantcrbuiy), V. Berry (Canterbury), and C. Lang (Otago). A splendid race, in which Miss Howarth not a solid pace over the first length, turning a yard ahead of Miss Smith, the other three being together in a bunch a yard hack. In the second length Miss Smith, who was swimming with an easier stroke than the AA raiiganui girl, reduced the gap by half a yard. Miss Murdoch being another 3yds back just ahead of Miss Lang. Miss Howarth was tiring, and in the last length commenced to 101 l badly, reducing her stroke. Miss Smith drew ahead with half the last length covered, and won by 3yds from Miss Howarth, Miss Murdoch being third 6yds further back, Miss Lang touching just u shade later. Time, 78 Lssoc—a New Zealand fresh water record.

220YDS JUNIOR BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP Holder of title. L. Olds (Otngo). Now Zealand salt water record, L. Olds (Otngo), 2min 43 l-ssec. Standard time, 3min 14scc. B. Gallato (Wellington) 1 G. Low (Canterbury) 2 J. M'Donald (Canterbury) 3 Gallate swam a race that reminded one a little of tho great junior, Leslie Olds, for the Wellington bpy set out to force the pace from the start, and, using a powerful stroke, he had opened up a gap of syds by the time onethird of the distance had been covered, Newell and Low following in that order nl.ead of M’Donald, Goughian being absolutely out of the race a long way back. The positions were unchanged at the 100yds mark, but in the next length Gallato spurted, and increased his lead to 10yds from Low and Ml‘Don aid. He finished well to win by 18yds from Low, M'Donald being 2yds behind his team mate. Time, 3min 4 1 -s.se c. 220YDS INTERCLUB HANDICAP L. Faircray (Auckland), 7seo ... 1 J. C. There is at present a heavy demand for farm labor in Canterbury province, and indications are that it will bo considerably heavier within the next few weeks, when harvesting operations will be in full swing. Mr F. Lill, who is in charge of the Fanners’ Union Labor Agency, told a reporter that from January 3 up to yesterday he had sent forty men into the country to various jobs, as compared with eight for the corresponding period last year. There were cowmen, cooks, gardeners, harvesters, and general farm hands among the men, whom Mr Lill described as being of good type. “In fact,” he said, “ with few exceptions, the men who have come in looking for work are of the right class, and should have no difficulty in giving satisfaction to their employers.—Christchurch correspondent. At a theatre a member of the audience threw a potato at the comedian. Undaunted, tho arlist threw back a chestnut. Hubby: ‘‘Do you know where my slippers are?” Wife: ‘‘l haven’t the slightest idea.” Hubby: “I know that. But where are my slippers?,”
