OR HAYWARD ANSWERS QUESTIONS On tlie subject of the fish depot, Cr Hayward (chairman of the General Conlmittee) answered questions as follows at the meeting of the City Council last night:— What was the object of building the depot?—The old fish depot in the railway yard was condemned by the Health Department as insanitary. Who has the right to use it?—lt is leased for one year by the wholesale fish dealers, who pay a rent of £6 a week, and anyone using it has to make arrangements with them. Who appointed the present auctioneers?—The City Council entered into negotiations with them, hence the present tenure. Was this privilege advertised? —No. As they were running a wholesale fish trade, the council approached them as the most suitable tenants. Cr Hayward added that the fish was now being sold under sanitary conditions.
