SUPPLY OF TEACHERS
DEPARTMENT ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY The Minister of Education wrote to the Education Board this morning in reply to the board’s memorandum regarding the statement reported to have been made by him in the House to the effect that unless the department took over all responsibility with respect to training colleges there would be too many teachers trained. The Minister stated that he had no intention when speaking in the House of implying that the onus for the training of more students in the training colleges than could be absorbed in the teaching profession rested upon the boards. He knew this was not the case. The department had ultimate authority, and of course must accept the responsibility. He trusted this explanation woupld make it clear to the board that he did not wish to lay blame upon any of the Education Boards for enrolling more students than necessary. “ Very glad to hear it,” remarked the Chairmaa of the board (Mr J. Wallace). Mr J. Mitchell: “Explanation accepted.”
