SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS

HELSGiI SHIELD CONTEST CSWGED THIS MMIHG This morning at the St. Clair beach a start was made with the New Zealand life-saving championships, the Nelson Shield contest for the New Zealand surf championship occupying pride of place. There was a largo gathering of interested spectators. St. Clair was not represented, the competing clubs being Canterbury (holders of the shield), Maranm (Wellington), and Lyall Bay (Wellington). This morning land drill and land resuscitation were taken, and the waterwork was proceeding this afternoon.. The general arrangements for the life-saving contesls were in the able bands of Mr D. Raniiatyno, secretary of the Otago Head Centre of the Royal Life-saving ISociey, the president of the local centre (Mr H. H. Henderson) acting as referee. The .judges were Messrs J. L. MTiidoe, F. C. Collins, and L. Dawkins. and the timekeepers Messrs D. M'Nie and E. H. James. The teams were:—

Lyall Bay.—S. Muller (captain, J. Hill, N. Dickson, J. Cameron, T. Ryan, B, MTvor, J. Mollier, and J. Blakeley. Canterbury.—F. S. Taylor (captain), A. F. Dalton, C. R. Iliordan, D. P. Lindsay, H. M. Eaglesome, A. T. Bolam, J. M. Eales, and C. Atkinson.. Maranui.—E. Hughes (captain), D. J. Murrell, C. C. Claridge, C. B. Eversleigh, J. F. Alexander, V. Fletcher, J. Whisker, and G. Easte. The displays this morning were good, the general standard of Lyall Bay and Maranui in particular being very high both in land drill and land resuscitation. The smartness and efficiency of both, teams were really a revelation to local life-saving enthusiasts, and Canterbury also performed well. The points will not be announced until the waterwork is concluded.

To-night at 6.30 the four-mau surf championship will be held.
