[By St. Clair.] WELLINGTON, January 23. j The weather remained beautifully j fine for the second day of the Wei- . lington Cup Meeting, and being a 1 close holiday on account of the anni- | versary of the province there was a record crowd present at Trentham, The course was again hard and fast, and tins no doubt accounted for the fields being smaller than on the opening day. Set Sail looked better in the parade than she did on Saturday, and was made a gootl favorite for the principal handicap of the day, with another Wingatui-trained horse in Pink Note the best backed of the others. On this occasion the public were good pickers, for these two had the final stage of the race to themselves. The race was run to suit the Invercargill Cup winner, for soon after the start Benuauce went out to the front and sot a very solid pace. This allowed Yoight to keep Set Sail on the rails all the way, and she lay in | second place until the home turn was reached. Laughing Prince was the first- to tackle her, out eight did not burst, his mount to shake him off. Nearing the distance post Green, on Pink Note, went up on the outside, | and for a few strides he looked to j have his head in front. Laughing Prince was the first to ciy enough, and Pink Note and Set Sail raced to the post stride for stride. The mare, • who was conceding the Otago Handicap winner 14lb, stayed on the better, and won a great race by a short head. The Hme recorded has only boon beaten once, when Star Stranger won in 2min 17sec last year with 9.0 in the saddle. Green probably made his run a little too early, but even had ha waited until nearer the post Set Sail finished so well that it might not have affected the result. The Douro Cup, the richest stake for hacks in the dominion, attracted a splendid field, but the riding a several stages of-the race was vay rough, and several well-backed horse* had their chances spoiled by bumping and crossing. Wayward, who met with interference nearly half a mile from home on Saturday, on this occasion was always well placed, and getting a clear run from the entrance to the straight stayed on well to ieneat the run of successes he has recorded for Mr J. M Samson since he gave 300 guineas for him at the beginning of last month. He was neglected in the betting. Spean Bridge, who was fancied in this race, - was badly handled, and ran a very P °Good C Cs Gold, like Set Sail, looked better for her first day’s race w hen paraded for the Metropolitan Handicap, and she might have finished in the money had she not met with a lot of trouble at the top of the Graight. She was badly humped by Aussie and being a small mare she got the worst of g it. The old champion The Hawk, showed that he is not a past number yet by easily beatmgagood field of sprinters homo by nearly two lengths in the good time ■ l™" 12sec. The win was the most popular of the meeting. Mr O’Connor’s starting ivas again good, but in several races the horses were kept standing at the post for unduly long peri-' 1 ' ‘

After the advertised time of starting to permit the totalisator to handle the investments offering, though there were only seven starters in the Mungaroa High-weight Handicap, it was an excellent betting race, and- the Otagobred Thurnbell was made a good favorite, with Beauty Light (ridden by R. S. Bagby), Airtight, and the imported Greengrocer next in demand. Lady Gay and Rotowhero were responsible for the pacemaking for the first five furlongs, then the favorite ran up and going across the top Lady Gay Jed Thurnbell, Airtight, and Panorama, who were running in close order. Turning into the straight Lady Gay was just in front of Thurnbell, with Greengrocer and Panorama next. At the distance post Greengrocer was in charge, and ran-home a very comfortable winner by nearly three lengths from the favorite, who only beat Lady Gay by a nose for second place. Airtight and Beauty Light were together three, lengths further back. The change of riders made a great difference in this horse’s running ns, compared with the form he showed on Saturday.

Ganymede was withdrawn from the Trial Plate, which was voted to he the best of good things for either Golden Armor or Keddar, the former being the better favorite. High Heather and Amor led Kaku Araki for nearly two furlongs. Then Kahu Araki ran to the front, and led Keddar and Golden Armor into the straight. Kahu Araki, who was the outsider of the field, stayed on to win easily by three lengths from Keddar, who just beat Golden Armor by a short head for second place. Investments, £8,3265. * * * * In the January Handicap Sir Archie and Oratrix were withdrawn, and Le Choucas was made a good favorite, carrying nearly twice as many investments as Nincompoop, Hananna, and Thorndale, who were evenly backed, Lausanne and Rascal being the next fancied. Gala Day, Horomea, Rascal, and Royal Damon were the first to show out from a bad start, Assurance and Damaris being badly left. They ran along the back in this order, and at the far turn Front Rank was with Gala Day, the pair being two lengths clear from Royal Damon, Alyson, Damaris, and the favorite. They raced across the top turn and into the straight, where Front Rank was in charge, with Lausanne, Rascal, Thorndale, and Le Choucas next. Racing to the false rail the latter changed his course over to the rails, and at the distance post was just showing in front of Thorndalo, wide out, Front Rank, Gala Day, Damaris, and Vertigern. Overhaul, who had been badly placed until entering the straight, put in a good run, but was not able to get through, and Le Ohoucas went on to win by a length and a-half from Yertigern, who beat Overhaul by a bead. Aylsnu was a good fourth, followed by Thorndale, Gala Day, and Damaris. Nincompoop gave a lot of trouble at the start, and was largely responsible for the poor despatch. Investments, £0,0155. ,

Jn the Nursery Handicap Amplifier and Briar Hoot were withdrawn, and in a good betting race Consent was sent out a few pounds better backed than Concentrate, this pair being much better supported,, than Goblin Market or High Disdain. Pari and Conwere the first two to show out, the former being just a little in front. Pari led Consent by half a length into the straight proper with Impertinence, Goblin Market, and High Disdain close up. At the distance post the favorite was in charge, but Goblin Market got a good run through on the rails, and drew out to win nicely by three lengths from Concentrate, who just heat Consent by a head. Australis, High Disdain, and Pnrl were next. Divestments, £8.2641. » * * * All started in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, for which the two Wiugatui-trained horses, Set Sail (Voight) and Pink Note (Green), were at once sorted out as the best, and the former was the better hacked. There was solid support for Oratrix, Mask, and Laughing Prince. Joy Bird was not allowed in the line at the barrier, and started from behind the field. Laughing Prince, Ring Boy, and Pink Note were the first to, break a good line, but passing the stand Bennanee, on the rails, was just in front of Laughing Prince, Set Sail, and Pink Note. Going out of the straight Benruin go took cli*u‘j*o 7 find led Sot Sail* Laughing Prince, and Pink Note past the mile post, the field being well strung out. Going along the back Bennanee drew out five lengths clear of Set Sail, with Pink Note and Laughing Prince running together, and just in’behind them were Countersign and Joybird. Bennanee came hack to Ins field as they raced round the far turn and across the the top, and at tlio turn for home Bennanee was just a little in front of Set Sail, and close 1 behind him came Laughing Prince on I the rails, Pink Note, and Countersign. Bennanee dropped out soon after reaching the straight, leaving Set Sail just in front of Pink Note and Laughing Prince. The latter got his chance at I the false rail, and a furlong from home 1 he appeared to be on even terms with sSet Sail and Pink Note. Laughing Prince dropped out less than 100yds , from the post, where Pink Note appeared to get his nose in front. The came mare staved on the better, and beat Pink Note by a short head. Laughing Prince was two and a-half lengths away third, and Countersign four lengths off fourth. Mask and Oratrix, who were both badly placed at the end of half a mile, were next. Investments, £11,182.

In the Douro Hack Cun Handicap only Some Lad was withdrawn, and Goshawk was sent out better backed than Lady Limond, this pair being much better backed than The Swell, Arikiwai, and the coupled pair, Keddar and Kindle, Blimp, and Spean Bridge. From a good start Blimp and Goshawk, who started from the rails, led out from Lady Limond, Wayward, and Polydeetes. Before reaching the far turn Lady Limond had taken charge, and was just in front of Polydectes, Blimp, The Swell, and Wayward, the favorite dropping back through interference. Lady Limond was in charge all across the top, and turned into the straight just in front of Wayward, Arikiwai (who covered some extra ground to get the position), King Midas, Keddar, and Polydeetes. Wayward had Lady Liniohd beaten before reaching the distance post, and, shaking off good challenges from The Swell, Arikiwai, and Keddar, won well by a length from Keddar, who beat The Swell and Arikiwai by heads. Lady Limond, Catkin, Goshawk (who met with further trouble in the straight) and Polydeetes were next. Investments, £11,120*. » * * * Paganelii, Booster, and Lady Limond were withdrawn from the Metropolitan Handicap, and Enlalie, who was making her first appearance at the meeting, was sent out better backed than Money Order and Aussie, Good as Gold and The Hawk being the next best backed. Good as Gold and Eulalie rvere

the first to appear in front, and they raced to the homo turn in front of Covent Garden, Aussie, and The Hawk. At this position Good as Gold got badly dealt with by Aussie, on the outside, and The Hawk, on the outer, and, being the smaller, she got the worst of it. Eulalio also met trouble, and stopped; and before reaching the distance post The Hawk was showing up, with Aussie, Limited, and Money Order (who was wide on the outer). Racing to the post The Hawk drew out to win easily by a length and a-half from Aussie, who ran a very different race compared with Saturday’s effort. Limited was two lengths away third, a full length in front of Money Order, Royal Ceres, and Eulalie. Investments, £9,548. » « ♦ * Only Erin-go-bragh was withdrawn from the Camp Handicap, for which Broad Acre was nearly twice as heavily backed as Billikins (who had a 51b allowance), Addlepate, and Dimmer, who were evenly supported in that order. The latter gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and was eventually left three or four lengths. Billikins and Addlepate were the first to show out, and Billikins was still in charge when the course proper was reached, with Sky Quest, Star-flight, and Cnmisader next. Billikins drew away in the run home to beat Starflight by nearly two lengths. Bronstell was three lengths further back third, just in front of Sky Quest, Cnmisader, and Dimmer. Investments, £10,7785,
