NOTES ON THE EVENTS [By St. Clair.] The attendance Mas good, the gate receipts totalling £357, and the totalisator turnover (£10,884) represented a slight increase. The racing was interesting and the best ever seen on the course. Mr M'lvor’s starting M - as good. After her good showing at Dunedin and Southland meetings Coomassie was made a warm favorite in the Maiden Plate, and frightened out most of the opposition, only four going to the post to oppose her. From an even start the favorite at once went to the front, and Mas never headed, winning very easily by three lengths from Mananui, who made a good attempt to reach the favorite at the home turn. Gong, a six-year-old gelding by Burrangong, and the first of his progeny to race, was a poor third. Investments, £844.

The Nightcaps Harness Trot attracted a good held of eleven, and--Weary Dillon, from A. M'Lellan’s stable, Mas at once selected as a good thing, being nearly tM-ico as M-ell backed at Luath and the locally-trained Turi Chimes. The favorite quickly established a lead, and showed the way to Cardinal and Blue for over five furlongs. Then Cardinal and Blue and the favorite paced on terms to the far turn, where the former headed-Weary Dillon and led into tho straight from Turi Chimes and the favorite. Cardinal and Bine appeared to have the race M r on 50yds from the post, but Turi Chimes put in a great run, and beat Cardinal and Blue by a neck. Eiffel ToM r er M'as three lengths further back. Investments, £1,3955.

The .gold cup which the supporters and friends of the club presented to bo added to the stake of the principal stake at the meeting drew the best field that has ever started for a Wairio Cup, and provided one of the best races. Celerity 11., whose injury, received at the Invercargill meeting, had yielded well to treatment, was sent out favorite again, carrying nearly twice as many investments as Queen Balboa, Black Duke, John Bradbury, and Bilbo, who were evenly backed. Schottische made the running from Bilbo over the first quarter of a mile, Black Duke and John Bradbury lying, at the tail of the field. Going into the back stretch Schottische and Bilbo were just clear from Queen Balboa, Baldowa, and the favorite, and there was no change in this order until they turned into the field. Queen Balboa made a good run at the top of the straight, and before reaching the distance post the favorite also moved up. Queen Balboa stayed on the best, and beat her stablemate, Bilbo, by. three parts of a length, with Celerity 11. a similar distance away third. Investments, £1,6624-

Sparkling Eyes, Solzia, and _ King Balboa were the best backed m the Wardlaw Hack Handicap, but the winner turned up in Flying Mist, who led all the way, but had to be ridden right out to beat Strathnaver, who ran second to her, also all . the way, by a length. She was ridden by the stable apprentice, P. Morrison, who was having his first ride in a race, and he handled the Martian mare well. Kmg Balboa made a forward move at the top of the straight, but he was unable to reach the leaders in the run home, and finished third. Investments, £1,331.

Though only a field of seven went to the post in the Apariraa Steeplechase, it produced a splendid race. Thistlecrown, Scamp (who was making Ins first appearance since going wrong at Wellington last July), Galway, and Calibration were evenly hacked, with the much-improved Nyanza next in demand. Scamp at once took charge, and, jumping very big, but not measuring his fences as a good one should, he showed the way for over a mile and a-half; then the much-improved Soldier’s Dream went up to him, but at the gorse fence returning to the course proper, about six furlongs from home, Scamp outjumped him, and led aaam. At the far turn Soldier s Dream again headed Scamp, and led him, with Nyanza and Calibration, to the post and rails, where Soldier s Dream fell. Nyanza ran up to Scamp, and they were on terms at the last fence, with Calibration _ and Galway next. Nyanza, who has improved a lot since going into his present owner’s hands, outstayed Scamp over the last half-furlong, and beat him homo by three lengths. Calibration was four lengths off third, and Galway next. Investments, £1,017.

The innovation of including a race for two and three-year-olds on the_ programme helped to create a lot of interest in the meeting, but it was not profitable from the club’s point of view. Only seven starters went to the post, and" the totalisator investments showed a decrease of over £6OO as compared with the race it was substituted for last year. Red Sea, who was purchased as a yearling at the Wellington sales last January by Mr J. L. Hannon, was made a much better favorite than Money Mint and Some Form, and, jumping out smartly, led all the way to beat Money Mint by two lengths, and Some Signal was next. Investments, £1,0284. * * * A field of ten went to tho post for the Birchwood Saddle Trot, for which Storm Bell was sent out favorite with tho bracketed pair Eiffel Tower and Great Gun, tho best backed of tile others. The favorite lost her chance at tho start by failing to strike her gait, and Sonata at once went to the front, leading Eiffel Tower and Smoker. At the end of half a mile Eiffel Tower was just in front of Sonata and Princess Thorpe, Storm Bell falling about half a mile, from home. Rounding the top Princess Thorpe ran into second place, and, challenging Eiffel Tower in the run down the straight, won comfortably by six lengths from Eiffel Tower, with Hush-a-hye finishing fast two lengths away third. S. Todd, rider of Storm Bell, was badly hurt, and removed to the Southland Hospital. Investments, £1,682.

A most successful meeting was con eluded with a good field of eight in tho Wrey’s Bush Handicap, for which Solrose was made a few pounds _ better lavonto than Sperm Bridge, this pair being much better hacked than Black Duke or Jack o’ Lantern. The latter gave one of his worst displays at the start, and held the field up for over a quarter of an hour. Some Rose, too, was inclined to ho troublesome when roused up. Eventually an excellent start was made, and Some Rose, Solrose, Speau Bridge., and Black Duke were tho leaders as they turned out of the straight. Jack o’ Lantern ran to tho front at the end of three furlongs, and was joined by Black Duke running along the back, tbc pair being clear of Solrose and Some Rose. Black Duke Ted Jack o’ Lantern into the straight, with Solrose, Some Rose, and Spean Bridge next. At the distance post Solrose had taken charge, but was a little later challenged by Spean Bridge, and a great race to the post resulted in a dead heat between this pair. Strathnaver was three lengths away third, and Some Rose close up fourth. Investments, £1,923}.
