While in Dunedin tho Australasian polo vault and decathlon champion, along with Mr Thomson, will be the guest of Mr F. D. Gibson, of the, Otago Centre. Air Keskincn is to compote at an athletic meeting on Monday night, Mr T. T. Hugo (Government inspector of tiro brigades) arrived yesterday from Invercargill. Air Hugo is making one of his periodical visits to the South Island. He will inspect tho Dunedin Brigade early next week. Dr Galway was a passenger by the through express yesterday for Stewart Island, where he will lecture at the Slimmer school for teachers, organised by the Southland branch of the Educational Institute.

Adjutant and Mrs Canty, of the Salvation Army, arrived during the week, and were tendered an official welcome at the .Dowling Street Fortress. Brigadier Burton, divisional commander, expressed Ids pleasure at receiving the new officers into his division. Several other speakers also welcomed the adjutant and Airs Canty, both of whom suitably replied. There passed away on December 28, at his residence, Bush road, Mosgiel, one of the most well-known and highlyrespected residents of that town in the person of Air David Owens. Air Owens was born in Cardigan, South Wales, in 1861. During the _ forty-eight years ha resided in Alosgiel he won the esteem of a wide circle of friends on the Taieri. For over forty years lie was closely associated with Baptist Church, and at the time of his death he held the office of elder and Sunday scliool superintendent. A very large concourse of mourners followed his remains to the East Taieri Cemetery, where the interment took place. Tho service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. B. Robertson. The deceased leaves a widow, eight daughters, and two sons. Dr J. Henderson lias been appointed director of geological survey (says a Wellington Press Association telegram).
