'A COACH ENGAGED. LONDON, January 12. The All-England Club has engaged Karel Kozelnh to coach British tennis players at Wimbledon for six weeks, beginning in April. PROFESSIONAL GAME. LONDON, January 13. Karel Kozelnh won the French professional lawn tennis championship at Nice, defeating Nadnch, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Nnduch eliminated Burke, the holder, in the semi-finals.

INFORMAL RACE WON BY OTAGO. (Per United Phess Association.] AUCKLAND, January 13. The first race in the fourth annual contest lor tho Cornwell Cup will ho hell on the Waitemata harbor to-mor-roiv afternoon. An informal race between the visiting crews took place this morning, Otago finishing 20sec ahead of Tanranga, and then came Canterbury, Whangarei, and Hawke’s Bay. Auckland, Mnmikau, and Wellington did not start. The annual conference of the Cornwell Cup delegates was held to-day. A remit from the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, that tho conditions of the contest be altered to allow each competing province to provide and sail its own boat, was defeated, Mr G. F. Bowlcy (Otago) being tho only one voting for it.

SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Dunedin public is in for a rare treat next week, for next Saturday will see the commencement of the New Zealand national swimming championships at the Munipical Tepid Baths, where will be gathered together one of the greatest collections of speed swimmers seen in action in. New Zealand for many years. This year’s championships are attracting even more than ussual attention, in view of the fact that they are being looked upon in the light of Olympic trials and tho fact that several recordbreaking performances have recently been registered by northern swimmers. D. P. Lindsay, the Canterbury swimmer, who last season won the 220yds, 440yds, 880yds, an done mile men’s national championships, is swimming as well as ever, and during the week he smashed the New Zealand record for 220yds, which he covered in tho great time of 2min 29sec. W. Cameron, the Wellington intermediate boys’ representative and holder of the New Zealand intermediate JOOvds record of tJlsec, will be one of the stars of the meeting, and N. Dowsett, holder of the New Zealand 100yds record of 57 2-ssec, is expected to take a power of beating in the 100yds men’s national championship, which is to be decided on the first day of the meeting. This should be one of the classic races of the fixture, the competitors including such fine swimmers as Dowsett, Lindsay, J. P. Farrell (the Auckland provincial champion), J- P. Emvright (veteran Auckland swimmer and hero of many previous championship meetings), C, Claridgo (of Wellington, who won the New Zealand intermediate honors a lew years ago), D. Murrell (also of Wellington), L. Fairgray (of Auckland), and W. H. Bailey (of Otago). The 100yds ladies’ national championship should also provide a great clash, especially as Miss Jtna Stocklev, holder of tho title and candidate for Olympic honors, will be keen to avenge her recent defeat by hci fellow-Aucklander, Miss D. Magee, last year’s New Zealand intermediate girls champion. Miss K. Miller and Miss M. Jepson, the Otago representatives, will both he well in the picture, though Miss Miller may perform better when defending her titles over the longer distances. . ... On the first night an open dive will bo held, and several of those who will later bo contesting the championship will be seen in action. There is every likelihood of Miss Ena Stockley, New Zealand ladies’ 100yds champion, making an appearance at the meeting, and the Otago cracks. Miss K. Miller (New Zealand 220yds and 440yds ladies champion) and Miss M. will also be seen in action. The 50yds inter-i club dash should be an exciting event, and the 100yds men’s interclub handicap is another race of interest. The novices* fancy diving should b© full of thrills and fun, while the open plain dive should witness some good displays, the competitors including R. C. Calder, New Zealand men’s diving champion. The novelty cork race will be an amusing item, mid junior and novice races promise to make up a thoroughly enjoyable programme.
