- -4 OTAGO V. WELLINGTON The Plnnkefc Shield match between Otago and Wellington will bo played at Carisbrook on January 2U, 21, 23, and 24. The Wellington Association is sending down a very strong side, which includes C. S. .Dempster, who proved one of the best bats in the New Zealand team which visited England, and other notable players, such as Badcock, who played a tine innings against Otago at Wellington recently; Stan Brice, who has represented his province for many years; B. Do R. Worker, who is well known to tho Dunedin public; J. S. Taylor, the Nelson coach, who recently made a century playing lor the town against the country in Wellington; 11. M. Lambert, a" slow bowler and a very useful * and H. Foley, who lias been scoring freely in Wellington lately. J. 11. Lamason is another batsman who has been showing good form this season. It will thus be seen that the Wellington side is a very strong all-round team, and if the weather holds good there should be some attractive scoring. The Otago team will be a stronger one than that which met Wellington at Wellington recently, and there is every prospect of a wellcontested match. Mr C. G. Wilson, the old Otago skipper, will accompany the visitors as manager. The team will arrive on Wednesday, and will stay at the Grand Hotel. THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM The Board of Control Selection Committee Ml ugh Trumble, T. H. Howard, and V.'Y. Richardson) has chosen a verv solid thirteen to tour New Zealand shortly (.says the Sydney ‘ Referee’). They are; W. M. Woodfnll, W. H. Ponsford, D. M. Blackie, H. G. Morton (Vic.), V. Y. Richardson, K. Schneider, W. Alexander, C. V. Griminett (S.A.), A. F. Kippax, A Jackson, R. M'Namee, and W. A. Oldheld (N.S.W.), R. M. Oxetiliam ((}■), with P. M. Hornibrook (Q.), J. Scaifo (V.), and D. Bradman (N.S.W.) emergencies. They leave Sydney on February 10, with Mr W. C. Bull (Sydney) manager. Hero is a wealth of batting, mucii brilliant fielding, the finest wicketkecping, and very good bowling, which might be still better with a lefthander of the beat class to assist Grimmett, Blackie. M'Namee, and Oxenham. The selectors have wisely selected four leading spin bowlers, all able to keep a length much more persistently than the average Australian bowler these times. The lour bowlers named and a left-hander would make a formidable combination mi an English tour. Unfortunately these bowlers are not youngsters in the game, M'Namee, tho youngest, being no colt in years. To judge by the personnel this should he one of the happiest touring teams that ever left Australia, for parts across the seas. They arc a line lot of fellows. In electing Victor Richardson captain of the Australian team to visit New Zealand the Board ol Control has honored the holders of the Sheffield Shield. “.V.Y.” is one of the best sportsmen among the cricketers of Australia. He has fought on with his team against defeat after defeat, and managed at last to land the Sheffield Shield. In doing so ho has batted and fielded as a champion. It will be most excellent experience for him to handle this team in New Zealand. The men are as fine a body as he is ever likely to handle, and he should have little trouble in creating an admirable team spirit. It will be Ills second visit with a team to the dominion. He was one of e, brilliant lot a few years ago.
