SPORTING

VINCENT RAGES SECOND DAY. [By St. Clair.] f OMAKAU, January 9. The weather was hot and sultry for the second day of the Vincent Jockey Club’s Meeting, and the course hard and dusty. The attendance was good, but the racing was not very interesting, and the dividends returned by the winners were very small. The total for the day was £4,141), as against £4,022} last year, making £8,202) for the meeting, as compared with £7,615) last year. Felony was made a little better favorite than Real Glad tor the Valley Handicap, and over the last furlong and a half they had the race to themselves, Felony just beating Real Glad by a neck. Puff was sent out favorite in the Cambrian Hack Handicap, and was led to the straight by Miss Trillion and Wild Berry. Then she ran to the front and stayed on to beat the fast-finishing Miss MTCcmmn by half a length, Moneymore, who spoiled his chances by breaking badly several times after getting a good lead in the first five furlongs, was made a little better favorite than Dick Swithin, only this pair being well backed. Trevillion took charge at the end of seven furlongs through Moneymore breaking and won very easily from Dick Swithin. Martis, who was a very hot favorite, won the Lauder Handicap by seven lengths from All British after leading all the way. First Lady was strongly backed in the Becks Handicap, and, jumping out smartly, led all the way to win easily by four lengths. _ Dick Swithin was made a good favorite in the Poolburn Saddle Trot, but skipped badly at the start. Harrotha and Nelson Fay were the next best backed. Nelson Fay caught Tribute and Levisca at the home turn and won by two lengths from Scottish Maid in the fast time of 2min 16 1-osec. Goldmine fell and dumped his rider at the end of half a mile, breaking some of 0. Reed’s ribs. An inquiry was held into the winner’s improved form, but the trainer’s explanation was accepted. The locally-trained mare Quicktorm, with a horseman up, led all the way in the Dunstan Hack Handicap, and beat Tardy easily.
