POSTAL REPORT WIND FAVORS FLIGHT [Special to the * Stab.’] AVELLINGTOX', January 10. The Postal Department advises that the New Zealand aviators left Richmond aerodrome at 5.14 (new Zealand time), and were sighted by the Maunganui, which was approaching Sydney three-quarters of an hour later, travelling at 110 miles an hour.
AH shipping has been requested to wireless progress reports, but this is the only one up to the present. The weather here is clear, with a light north-west wind which, if it prevails far into the Tasman, will be highly favorable to the aviators, making for Wellington." There has been doubt about the nature of the wireless equipment on the 'plane, but inquiries indicate that it cannot be utilised for sending anything except an automatic signal. This is being watched for by the Wellington Radio Station on a short-wave thirtymetre receiving set, but continuous signals are not expected, as short-wave operators know that these signals will fade out when the distance lessens.
