ELECTRIC REPRODUCER

ADAPTABLE TO GRAMOPHONES AND WIRELESS Tho strains of delightful band music floating forth from the Caledonian Ground yesterday afternoon made those in the vicinity wonder what band it was practising on a Friday afternoon, and quite a crowd gathered to see for themselves. However, no band was to be seen, but in front of the grandstand a machine was fitted up from which the music was issuing. A trial was being carried out in the presence of amateur athletic officials for the purpose of ascertaining the worth of a new invention, the elcctrovox, for providing music at athletic sports meetings. The electrovox, which is fitted up somewhat similarly to a wireless set, is the invention of a Dunedin young man, Mr J. Stone, who has been experimenting in this direction for about three years past. It is an electric reproducer which can be used on gramophones, and is adaptable to a wireless set. The principle of the machine is audio amplification and it is easily adaptable to various types of music or speech, being particularly efficient in registering tho lower frequency notes which would be most advantageous in announcing the results of athletic events. ■Yesterday’s trial in the reproduction of v arious gramophone records was a decided success, the music being clearly heard from all parts of the ground. Tho machine does not produce any distorted sound and to anyone outside the grounds it might have seemed that an orchestra or band was playing' within. The installation of such a machine would save sporting organisations and kindred bodies from considerable expense in acquiring the services of a band, and the music itself is very well produced.

Patents have been applied for for the clectrovox, which should become very popular when it is more widely known.
