DUNEDIN SEASON Joseph IHslop, Hie world-renowned tenor, will open Ins Dunedin season at His Majesty’s Theatre on Tuesday next. Mr Hisiop comes to New Zealand with a reputation gained in the world’s largest opera-houses. lie Ims sung in every country of note in the world. Mr IJislop's tour of Australia, was marked by intense enthusiasm and crowded houses, and the Auckland and Wellington seasons were also triumphs. The Now Zealand tour is limited, as Mr Hisiop has been engaged to return to Melbourne to sing in ‘The Messiah ’ with Hie Melbourne Philharmonic Society on December 20 and 24. For the opening concert on Tuesday a gala performance lias been arranged. His star item will be ‘ Ah Fuycz,’ from Massenet’s ‘Manon,’ with piano and organ and, chimes accompaniment. Mr W. Paget Gale will bo at the organ. Another notable item will be Beethoven’s ‘ Adelaide,’ rind other _ selections will bo chosen from the singer’* extensive repertoire. Alberta Sciarretti, who has a line European reputation as a solo pianist, in addition to playing all the accompaniments will play • several, solos, among which the ‘Prelude and Fugue’ (Szamboli) and compositions by Handel, Martusci* and Chopin will lie interesting. It has been said of Hisiop that he is “unquestionably a past master of color.’’ His subtlety in all tbc varied branches of expression is simply delightful. He employs his beautiful voice wit)) a skill most rare, and Las under bis complete control all Hie resources of technique, with manifest authority and breadth of style. _ He proves himself equally at home in a softly shaded old Italian lyric, a tender poem of Grieg, or the passionately dramatic lament which Puccini has allotted to the distraught Cauio in his impressive Pagliacci. It is interesting to note that.Hisiop has scored some of his greatest successes in ‘Madame Butterfly ’ and ‘ Boheme ’ and ‘La Tosca,’ excerpts from which will be included in his concert next Tuesday.
