(Received November 25, at 8.55 a.m.) The ‘ Westminster Gazette 5 states: “ No crown jewels in Europe approach those of the Turkish Seraglio,” declared John Jahnsson, a Swedish jeweller, who lias returned from a commission to give an expert opinion on them. “ I was breathless when confronted with the fabulous hoard of pearls, diamonds, emeralds, and rubies displayed in heaps. There were innumerable gold and silver articles, sot with jewels. The handle of one dagger is carved from a single emerald. The throne is of pure gold, and ornamented with 2U,00U pearls and 1,000 rubies and emeralds. The many gates are guarded by armed men to protect the entrance to the Seraglio, and the united effort of eight men is required to open the last.”— Sydney ‘Sun’ Cable. [The Seraglio is the former residence of the Sultan in Constantinople. _ It crowns the most easterly of the city’s seven hills, and is surrounded by a wall two miles round. Mohammed 11. commenced the in 14G8, and Suleiman 11. made considerable additions during 1520 to 15GG. Since 1839 it has not been in use, and lias fallen into decay. It contained the Sultan’s harem, and from this lias como the uso of the word for a place where women aro kept for licentious pleasure.] '
