LAMB MORTALITY

OXALATE POISON FROM SORREL (Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, November 14. Dr Owen Johnston, superintendent of the Southland Hospital, who carried out experiments for a year to ascertain the cause of mortality in lambs, states that pulpy kidney is caused by oxalate poisoning from sorrel in its early stages of growth. Tho ultimate remedy would be to eliminate sorrel from/the..pastures. This would take a long time, but meantime farmers would require to have sufficient sorrel-free feed to carry the ewes and lambs over the four to six weeks’ danger period each year. Several farmers related incidents which supported Dr Johnston’s theory.
