An old lady, evidently up from the country, entered a telephone call box, took off the receiver, and was spoken to by the operator. She gave the number required, and was instructed to put two pennies in the slot and turn the handle. This she did, but, being of a generous nature, she inserted a third, saying at the same time: “ The extra one is for you, my dear.” She spoke to her friend and left the box. About ton minutes afterwards she returned, took off the receiver, and was asked; “ Number, please.” “ I don’t want to speak to anyone this time,” she said, “but when I was here Just now; I left my umbrella. It is not here now. I suppose you haven’t seen it, have you?” Agatha: “Do departing cooks ask for a reference nowadays?” Harriet: '“No,'they request letters of introduction.^
