The survivors of the Mafalda's crew and the Mosella’s passengers all declared that the tragedy ocurred in the black of night with heavy seas and a fierce wind. They told of the screams of the dying women and children, of the heroic rescues, and o/ a shark overtaking a swimming man arid devouring him. They also declared that a dozen of the Mafalda’s crew wei e killed by a boiler explosion,' which sent the ship sinking stem first.
