- BRITISH !H PRECARIOUS < CONDITION MOST PLAY FOR CAUTION PROFESSOR GILBERT MURRAY’S WARNING. , Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, October 27. (Received October 28, at-1.30 a.m.) Professor Gilbert Murray, is reported by the ‘ Daily Telegraph ’ as declaring in a speech at Oxford that tho British Empire is in a critical condition. There wora four great empires before, and it was dangerous then for one to do anything without consulting tho others. Three of these empires are shattered to pieces, and only the British Empire is left, and it is in a precarious condition. The age of great. Powers is ended, therefore, and tho time is past •when we could do practically what we liked. Our Empire before was increasing by a general impetus,, now it was in retreat. In spite of the difficulties, however, weVwere on the up-grade as a nation, but must play for caution, avoid war, revolution, or any shock to our credit. Tho dislike felt against tho four great Empires before tho war was now concentrated against Britain.
