CONFLICTING REPORTS
SINKING Of THE MAFALDA NO AUTHENTIC INFORMATION Press Association—By Telegraph- Copyright, NEW YORK, October 26. (Received October 27, at 11.5 a.m.) With the chaotic and utterly conflicting reports still being received, nearly twenty-four hours after tho Mafakla sank off the Brazilian coast, it is impossible yet to obtain authentic information regarding the extent of the disaster and the number of lives lost. Wireless reports from numerous sources received here estimate the death list at figures varying from fifty to 400, but the present indications ai‘o that probably 100 passengers and crow were drowned. However, this figure may’ materially bo increased or decreased when the vessels carrying f lie survivors reach port. These vessels include tho steamers the Avelona, the Empire Star, the Formosa, tho Aihena, the Baden, the Rosetti 11., and the Salem.
