SUCCESSFUL ATHLETIC FIXTURE

BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ONE RECORD SMASHED In fine hut chilly weather the'Otago Boys’ High School’s athletic sports meeting was brought to a successful conclusion at Carisbrook yesterday, afternoon, and, though the dead state of tho track and tho rather stilt' breeze blowing across the ground were partly responsible for the fact that there was little outstanding in tho way of fast times, it is pleasing to bo able to report that one record was smashed during the gathering, this being in the Half-mile Handicap. W. W. Abel, the scratch man, walked exceedingly well, and returned drain 41) 3-ssec for the distance, time which shortened the existing record of 3min 5-jscc by over 12sec.

lit the shorter distance events tho times were on tho slow side, hut, though no records were broken, some fair times were recorded over the middle distances, the half-mile senior championship being won by 11. G. Jolly in 2min 12 J-oseo —a good performance considering tho prevailing conditions. The senior cup was won by It. G. Jolly with 17. j points, H. L. Trotman being runner-up with 14 points. In addition to winning the half-mile, Jolly carried off the 120yds hurdles championship against the wind in 18 4-ssec and the long Jump at 18ft G>Jin. Ho was second in the quarter and dead-heated for second place in the high jump. Trotman’s best performance in tho quarter, which he won in 56 2-sscc. A. G. M. Clark won both sprints, and, though his times were not .very last, he scored convincing victories. The junior championship went to A. Orange, G. Armishaw and C. W. Trotman being runners-np. ’With the exception of W. S. Duke’s performance in the high jump ,however, there were no really outstanding performances in tho junior division. In both senior (under 1G), and junior handicap events splendid entries were received, and the handicapping was of so uniform a nature that many line finishes were witnessed. A good deal of promising talent was revealed, more particularly among the juniors, one of the best of whom was C. Beatson, who scored several wins. The old boys’ events both produced large fields, some well-known runners taking part. The furlong went to the ’Varsity champion, It. I'. Barr, from scratch, and J. J. Morris won the halfmile from scratch.

Tho conduct of the meeting left nothing to he desired, and reflected great credit on the superintendent (Mr R. W. S. Bolting), his assistant (Mr T. J. L. Rantin), and other officials. The starter was Mr J. P. Northoy, who carried out his duties very satisfactorily. Results of the afternoon programme; HANDICAP EVENTS.
