On Tuesday evening last a benefit concert was given in the Hoslyn Theatre in aid of a resident who has been laid aside by illness for a considerable time. The Uov. J. D. Smith presided, and thanked the perlonnors and. audience for assisting in such a. worthy cause, also speaking of the good work done by Afr F. Still, who promoted the concert.. A most enjoyable programme was provided by the “Kanamusu" Entertainers, each item being desen edlv encored by an audience that filled the theatre. The performers were;—Mrs A. Newey Alisscs Gwen Cooper, F. Patton, B. Alertyn, Nanna Newey, Messrs 'Paid Reno, I*. Ramagc, A. Newey, J. Bentell. F. Eggers, N. Scurr. G. Butler, and Reno and Sparks. Airs A. Newey officiated ns accompanist.

A general meeting of the Dunedin sub-branch of the Otago Educational Institute was held on Friday last. Air A. Thomson presided over a very large attendance of members, ami, in his opening remarks, extended a welcome to Messrs G. AY. C. Macdonald and G. Turner and to friends ol teachers who were present. Reference was made to the loss which the educational world had suffered by flic passing away of the late Air P. Goyen, who had helped to mould education in Otago and elsewhere. The chairman moved a, motion of condolence with tho relatives of Mr Goyen, tho meeting standing in silence. Tho correspondence included a circular letter from tho secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute dealing with married women teachers, dangers of sectional voting, and the Education Department’s proposed scheme of nonpayment of bursaries to new entrants to training colleges. The chief attraction of the meeting was an address on “ Eurytbmics ” by Miss A. L. Hurst, a visiting English teacher. Aliss Hurst handled her subject in a most capable style, and, wtih the aid of suitable pianoforte music, showed how musical appreciation can begin with young children, “ time ” and “ notation of music” being introduced to make a groundwork lor the more advanced work of tho upper standards. Aliss Hurst briefly sketched tho history of the subject, and, although a {nil teaching course in eurytbmics took about three years to master, in less than an hour Aliss Hurst skilfully outlined the basic principles of this delightful modern phase of musical education. Aliss Hurst was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for her interesting and able demonstration. The next meeting of the sub-branch will he held on Friday, August 19, when Air J. F. AA’ilson, of Alaori Hill School, will lead a. discussion on ‘ Teaching of History in Primary Schools.” On Friday evening tho Early Settlers’ Hall presented an animated appearance, the occasion being a dance promoted by the staffs of several Dunedin wholesale merchants. Shortly after 8 p.m. oyer 100 couples took the floor, and dancing was kept up with unabated vigor until 1 a.si. The committee had wisely included a- number of the older dances in the programme, and it was most marked how popular these proved with a majority of those present. During the evening carnival hats were distributed, and a “ snowball ” fight was held : and adtogather a right merry time was spent. Mr Restieaux contributed a humorous sing anent the scarcity of houses to let, and was heartily encored: while Air Ellison and his staff and Mr AIL Price’s orchestra carried out their duties to the satisfaction of all.
