Mr .1. B. Shaddock-left for Auckland this morning on private business. Mr P. L. Halsted wont by the 11J34 train this morning for Wanganui. Mr W. Dali, who travelled by the through express to-day, _ intends to spend a few days in Wellington, and then go on for a holiday in Sydney. Mr H. F. Sincock went by tram to Christchurch to-day. At the last meeting of the Dunedin Athenaeum reference was made to the death of Mr H. F. Bastings, who after twenty-five years of faithful service retired by reason of ill-health. The committee was unanimous in holding that Air Bastings had proved imself a loyal and conscientious officer, although often hampered by ill-health. Ho gave ungrudgingly advice and help to subscribei's from his long and intimate knowledge of the works contained in tho library. Air Win. J. Harridgc, who died last week and was buried at Anderson’s Bay on Friday, was tho youngest son of Mr T. Harridgo, one of the old-time yachtsmen of Otago Harbor. William learned his football and boating at Ear veusbourne, amd last year was president of tho Alhambra Club. Mr E. Blundell, a brother-in-law, came to Dunedin for tho funeral, and started back for Ampler this morning. Air L. O’Toole, manager of the Invercargill gasworks, came from Invercargill this morning and went on to Christchurch. Several members of the local staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company attended at the railway star tion tins morning to farewell Air E. A. Eeid on his departure for Camara. The burial at tho Southern Cemetery yesterday afternoon of Air Michael Piper was with full fireman's honors, tho deceased having been a member of the Dunedin Fire Brigade for 26 years. The casket, enwrapped in a Onion Jack, was borne from tl)e Eoslyn station on one of the brigade’s machines. Tho procession was headed by a massed 1 band made np from the Kaikorax, St. Kilda, and Tramways Bands. Alen from tho central station and the Hillside, Port Chalmers, and Alosgicl brigades followed, also a largo representation from tho Loyal Albion rjodgo of Oddfellows and many personal friends. The mayor (Air Taverner), Air John Wilson (chairman of the board), Miff. T. Barnaul! (secretary), and other xaexubers were present. The firemen from Leaduuarters, under Superintendent Napier, stood to attention at the Fountain. The sennee at the cemetery was conducted by the Rev. Father APAlahon, and Deputy-superintendent Salmon, who was in charge generally, read the firemen’s ritual. At a meeting of the Dunedin Athcnteum Committee tho following minute was passed;—“The committee desires to place on record its sense of tho loss it has sustained by the death of Air P. Goyen and its appreciation of tho valuable services rendered by him for so many years to the institution which it controls. Air Goyen was a member of the Athenaeum Committee from May, 1914. to February, 192(i,« and was honorary secretary from January, 1920, to February, 1926. During this long period Air Goyen gave the Athenaeum the benefit of his great scholarship, his ripe judgment, and his wide knowledge of books; and tho enthusiasm with which he served the interests of the institution will long be remembered bv those who were privileged to bo associated with him. The Athenaeum itself will miss his familiar figure, for ha was a constant attendant at the library and at tho reading room, making these his almost daily resort. The building up of several branches of tho library was duo in a very large measure to his untiring insistence on the educative value of tho Athenaeum, and many shelves will loim stand as an urn named monument to his memory. The committee also joins with the various educational bodies in the city in paying a tribute to nhe greatness of tho work performed by Air Goyen during the period of his active service as inspector of the primary schools of Otago.” New visitors to the Grand Hotel include Air T.
