UNEMPLOYED DEMONSTRATION NEARLY A RIOT POLICE PATROLLING STREETS. Press Association—By Telegraph —Copyright. ADELAIDE, July 23. A demonstration by the unemployed almost developed into a riot. When the police attempted to disperse a meeting at which violent speeches were being made the mob attacked them, and an inspector was felled and badly injured. Tho mounted police were called out, hut were unable to get among the crowd congregated in Victoria square, owing to the railings. A strong hotly' of foot police, however, removed the crowd as it came from tho square. Then the mounted police rode among them, and, despite heavy stone-throwing, managed to disperse tho crowd, but not before many troopers had been struck.

An enormous crowd collected, and at one stage the disturbance almost developed into a serious riot. There were many arrests, amd the mounted police are now patrolling the streets, riding two abreast, to guard against further disturbances. A number of those arrested were sent to gaol Tor. a week.
