The Dominion Meteorologist (Mr D G. Bates) supplied the following at noon to-day :—The indications are tor south-easterly winds, moderate to strong, , and freshening, weather probably cold and changeable; barometer unsteady; tides good, seas rough swell.

The Gale, which arrived on Saturday, afternoon, is to sail_ to-morrow for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. The Waihemo was to leave Port Chalmers this afternoon for Bluff and Now Plymouth to complete discharge of her cargo from Pacific Coast ports. The Opilii was to leava Bluff to-day for Dunedin. She is due to-morrow, and is to sail the following. day for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport. The Kahika was timed to leave Timaru to-day for Dunedin. She is expected here to-morrow to load out on Wednesday for Napier and Gisborne via ports. It was expected that the Katoa would leave Wellington to-day. She is duo to-morrow afternoon to load for Timaru, Lyttelton. Wellington, and Auckland.

The Waipiata loads at Auckland at the end of next week for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Oamaru, and Timaru. The City of Batavia is to leave New York on August 10 with American cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. ARRIVED.—JuIy 23. Gale, s.s. (1.30 p.m.), 567 tons, Nalder, from Wanganui and Wellington. LARGEST FRENCH LINER. The new French liner lle-do-Franco. which comenced running in the Havre-Plymouth-New York service last month, is’ the largest steamer built in the world since the war. Her tonnage is 43,548 gross. She is the fifth largest steamer afloat. Other vessels larger than the* Ile-de-France arc the Majestic, 56,000 tons; Berengaria, 52,000 tons; Olympic, 46,439 tons; and Aquitanin, 46,647 tons. NEW P. AND O. LINER. The P. and O. Steam Navigation Company lias placed an order with the Alex. Stephens and Sons Company for a passenger liner of 19,000 tons for the company’s London trade. Accommodation will bo provided for about 400 first-class and 200 second-class passengers. She is to be 600 ft long, and will he propelled by high-pressure turbines obtaining steam from Yarrow boilers working at 3751 b pressure. The most interesting feaure is that electric transmission from the turbines to the propeller shaft will bo fitted, and she will be the largest ship thus equipped to be constructed in Great Britan. Turboelectro drive has been tried in the United States with fair success. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL. THE CANADIAN SEIGNEUR. The Canadian Seigneur arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Montreal via ports, and is to sail to-morrow lor Timaru and Dunedin to continue discharging Canadian cargo and load products for New York, Boston, and Montreal. The vessel is due on Thursday, and■ will sail the following day for Wellington and Auckland to complete loading. DUTCH-BUILT MOTOR SHIP. The Netherlands Shipbuilding Company, of Amsterdam, has contracted with the Norwegian owners to build a motor tank ship of 13,160 tons deadweight. The machinery, consisting of two single-acting six-cylinder Diesel motors of, in all, 4,200 i.h.p., will be delivered by Werkspoor, This is the fourth vessel to be built by the Netherlands Shipbuilding Company for the same owners. FRENCH STEAMER LOST. The loss of the French steamer St. Francois Xavier, better known as the Kulambangra, is reported from Manila. All hands were saved. Bound from Noumea to Haiphong and Saigon, the vessel went aground on the London Reef, situated between Borneo and Saigon.

Originally owned by Lever Bros., Limited, and named Kulambangra, she was for many years engaged 1 in the Island trade out of Sydney. She continued in this service until about 1914, when she was sold to a British firm. Before being taken over by the Cie Navale do [ Quest, her present owners, she was named Mauritian. As the St. Francois Xavier, she made several voyages to Australia, calling at Sydney, Newcastle, and Port Kcmbla to load for Noumea, and the vessel also voyaged to Saigon and Haiphong.
