The match commenced in dull, threatening weather on a soft wicket. Sibbles replaced Nichols. Jackson won the toss, and Percy Holmes and Sandham opened to the bowling of Tate and Larwood. At the luncheon adjournment one wicket was down for 69. The cricket was not exhilarating, but it was sound and interesting. At the tea adjournment the score was four for 212. Hearue batted carefully, and took 105 minutes to reach 50. KENT V. SURREY CHAPMAN’S INCLUSION. LONDON, July 23. Chapman's appearance for Kent against Surrey after his refusal to captain England at Bristol owing to business engagements has caused controversy. Fender, when interviewed, strongly objected to the inclusion of Chapman, pointing out that the counties had agreed to let off the players required for the test trials. Surrey refused to play Hobbs against and coincidentally in tine Sheffield trial, after Hobbs, owing to illness, had refused to play at Sheffield, but recovered in time for the county fixture.
