CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

SOCIAL EVENING. Tho social evening held bv the Caledonian Society of Otago this week m the Embassy' Salon was a most successful function. It took tho form of a concert, social, and dance, and was attended by about 200 persons. The Pipe Band, headed by Mr John Qgg, played from High street to tho hall. The President (Mr J. S. Douglas),, who presided, apologised ior the absence of the mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner), also of the past president (Mr Eodcrick Mackenzie), who was out of town. An enjoyable programme of Scottish items was then presented by the following Miss B. Clements, Miss L. M‘Donald, Mrs Warnock, Mr B. Kawlinsou (songs), Mr W. Le Gal (violin solo), Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association Entertainers (Scottish part songs), Dunedin Highland Pipe Band and Begg’s Orchestra (Scottish selections), and Misses Olivo Scott, Lorna, Budge, Doreen O’Sullivan, and Beulah King’s party (Scottish dauees). After supper had been provided the past president (Mr Jas. Brown) proposed a hearty vote of thanks tq the performers. He also referred to the honorable career of the society, and said that,- although owing to altered conditions it was not now able to carry out all the objects for which it was established, ho still considered it was doing a useful work in the community, A most enjoyable dance then followed, consisting of many of tho older dances, interspersed with some of the more modern ones.
