Marsdcn, D.Sc. (secretary of tho Department of Scientific and industrial Research); Dr G. H. Scholefield, D.Sc., F. ; Dr P. G. Morgan, M.A., A.C.S.M., F.R.G.S. (Director of Geological Surveys)and Mr H. M. Goro (secretary of the Now Zealand Academy of Fine-Arts, Wellington). Tho death took place at Gisborne yesterday of Mr Edwin Claude Bolton,_ an old resident of tho district, who assisted in the establishment of schools in Poverty Bay. The deceased had been suifermg from heart trouble for some time. Mr C. C. Roberts, M.Sc., nas 1 ecu appointed to the position of science master in the King Edward Technical College in place of Mr G. 51. sloir, who is :bout to proceed to England to take up research work. Mr R. Ponseler, Ph.D., post-graduate scholar in science of the University of New Zealand, is proceeding to London, where ho will attend King's College to ftirsuo a post-graduate course of research in chemistry. At the close of business to-day the Dunedin stall of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, assembled for the purpose of saying farewell to Mr E. A. Reed, who has been promoted to tho position of accountant at the Oamaru branch of tin company. Mr C. N. Draper, on behalf of the staff, wished Mr Reed every success in his new position, and presented him with a solid leather suit case and attache case.

An old' identity, in the person of Mr F. Hubbard, passed away at Milford (Auckland) on July 3, in his seventy-eighth year. Hr Hubbard came to Canterbury :rom Esses with bis parents in 1855, thirty-live years later settling in the Waikato, where lie bad been ever since, his last successful farming venture being in what is now known as the To Hoc district. This rich valley he was the means of opening up, it having been previously all Crown and Native land. Mr Hubbard took a great interest in local affairs, and was for thirteen years a member of the Huntly Road Board, also some years member of the To Aroha Borough Council and other bodies. He was a well-known figure at, horticultural shows throughout New Zealand, his expert knowledge being requisitioned on many occasions as judge. For several years prior to his death lie had lived at Pukekohe. Mr Hubbard was a justice of the peace, and an old member of the Masonic fraternity. He had also been a continuous member of one lodge of the Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., for fifty-seven years, which is almost a record for New Zealand. He is survived by two sons—Mr F. W. W. Hubbard, of Hamilton, and Mr E. 11. Hubbard, of Patetouga—and by bis brothers —Mr S. E. Hubbard, of Opoho, Dunedin, and Mr W. TV Hubbard, of Newcastle, Australia.
