A Sydney message announces the death of Mr John'James Lyons, the famous Australian international cricketer; aged sixty-four years. Reference to the death or Mr I * Clark was made at the twenty-first anniversary function of the Maori Hill School last night by tho chairman (Mr R. Armit). Ho spoko of the services that Mr Clark, who was chairman of the committee at the time of his death, had rendered the school. The assemblage stood in silence as a mark of respect to his memory. The funeral of the late Mr Alexander Scoullar took place at Wellington on Tuesday last, the service at the residence and also at the graveside, Karori, being conducted by the Rev. Dr Kennedy Elliott. Tho late Mr Scoullar was*born in Dunedin, but for the past four years ho bad resided in Wellington. Ho was the second son of tbe late Mi- Arthur Scoullar, one-timo Mayor of Dunedin. Ho was of a kindly am] genial disposition, and did many benevolent actions in a quiet, unassuming way. The deceased was a very great lover of art and literature, and during his lifetime presented_ various institutoins with volumes of classical works, and pictures given by him hang in the Dunedin Art Gallery to commemorate his memory. Gibb (Birmingham), Mr Leonard Learoyd (Bradford), Mr Edward Hemming (Melbourne), Mr Leo Lee (Lower Shotover). Recent arrivals to tho Excelsior Hotel include Mr Justice Fraser, Messrs W. Scott, and J. A. Gilmour, (Wellington) H. Pithaway (Christchurch), Mr J. M’Leod (New Plymouth), Mr Ritchie (Bannockburn), and Mrs Garret (Invercargill).
