AUSTRIA’S OLDEST NEWSPAPER Austria.'* oldest newspaper—and one of the oldest in the world among those, still exist i ng—haa just, celebrated its 250th anniversary. It is now known as the ‘ Linzer Zeitung,’ but was caller) the ‘ Liinzerisehes Extract Blatt dor Ordinari Zeitungen ’ when it was founded January 2, 1677, by Jacob Mayr, of Kempten. Linz is the capital of the federal province of Lower Aus--1 ria. Added interest attaches to this anniversary owing to tho discovery only n short time ago of a precious copy of this newspaper of 25(1 years ago. This issue of the ‘ Linzer Zeituug ’ is dated April 24, 1677; it was found in an old book cover by Dr Konrad Seliiffman, director of the Study Library of Linz. In 1677 the ‘Linzer Zeitung’ was tho most-read daily newspaper in Uppej’ Austria. Jt has since, however, loft the ranks of the dailies and has become a. weekly gazette. Tho second oldest newspaper in Austria, is the ‘ Wiener Zeitung,’ founded im 1703, of which a few complete filej still exist. The third oldest newspaper is the ‘ Klagenfurter Zeitung,’ dated back more than 150 years.
