LOCAL AND GENERAL

The New Zealand University Council last night announced the result of the election by the heads of the secondary schools of New Zealand of two representatives to sit on the council. The election resulted in the return of Mr C. IT Crcswell, M.A. (head master of Wellington College), and Mr \V. A. Armour, M.A. (head master of Napier Boys’ High School). The election for the technical schools’ representative resulted in the return of Mr J. H. Howell (director of the Wellington Technical College). Between forty and fifty unemployed waited upon the mayor of Palmerston North in connection wtih unemployment in the borough, asking that the council embark upon further relief works. The speakers contended that the Government had failed in its duty in that the serious position was foreseen twelve months ago, and the Public Works Department could have had everything ready to carry out the railway deviation, which would have absorbed all the workless in Palmerston North. The Borough Council was also congratulated on its decision to pay 14s per day for relief work. The mayor decided to make a public appeal for funds to carry out further relief works. The meeting of- tb railway branch of the Workers’ Educational Association was again well attended. The subject of the lecture was ‘ Unemployment and Its Various Causes.’ As developed by Mr G. M'Cracken it proved of great interest, and all realised the importance of the study of such a question. At the next meeting a scheme to greatly reduce unemployment will be discussed. Tho following were the subheadings of the lecture:—(l) frepression in Secondary Industries —(a) More Protection for Local Industries, (b) High Wages Another Serious Drawback to Local Manufacturers, (c) Public Indifference to Claims of Local Industry ’; (2) ‘Depression in Primary Industries—(a) Sheltered Trades Were Getting More Than They Produced, (b) Primary Producers Paying High Prices for All Commodities, (c) Primary Costs of Production in Rural Products Higher, While-Pprices of Product*? Less, IV Too Much Capital Sunk in Motors and Petrol Instead, of Productive Work.’
