Our Auckland correspondent sends the following:—

A soci.il afternoon was given in the Pacific Club by Ihe Hon. George Fowlds and Mrs J‘ owlds to enable old friends to meet Mr and Mrs W. Grow. After twenty-seven years in that capacity Mr Crow lias retired from the position of private secretary to Ministers, and now intends spending two or throe years in England. In referring to the period when ho was a Minister of the Crown, Mr I 1 owlds paid a high tribute to tho part that Mr Crow had done in helping him with the onerous duties which had devolved upon him, and also to the work done by Mrs Crow when she was stenographer with them. It was not only to the Minister to whom ho was attached, Mr Fowlds explained, that his services were so valuable, hut he had also done fine work for Mew Zealand. He had accomp-nied the Hon. .Richard Scddon 'n 1897 to tho Diamond Jubilee and Mr Fowlds to Africa and Australia, and during tho war he also went in ins capacity as private secretary to a. Minister with the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes to Egypt, Gallipoli, and Malta. His work was both invaluable and tactful. Three years ago he retired from the Public Service after a total service of over forty years, and was now returning to England, where he had been attached to tho High Commissioner's office, and it was iho wish of ail 'his friends that he should have a very enjovahic time. In' replying, Mr Crow hanked those present for the compliments chat had hem; paid to him, and spoke of the hue work clone in politics by the Hon. G. Fowlds. When Minister of Education he laid down a basis that all could he proud of. His Public Health Act and his work for the hospitals wore invaluable, and it was, said the speaker, to him that the beginning of tho town planning of the Government could he traced. Mr Crow also spoke of the line work that is being done in the High Commissioner’s office. There is a staff of over 100, and they not only do a lot of work for the Government and public bodies, but also For private individuals, of which too little is ever heard. The office would move into larger premises further down tho Strand ,is soon as leases fell in and it was his hope that New Zealanders would make more use of its utilities in the future. Eulogistic references were also made to the guest of honor diy Mr Spragg, also by Mr C. Treweek and Mr F. Hawley, who had known him for many years. The guests were teceived by the Hon. George Fowlds, who was assisted by Mrs Fowlds, wearing black velvet with a. black hat and fur wrap. Mrs Crow was in a navy ensemble suit and hat in two tones of cocoa red; Airs G. M. Fowlds, navy ensemble suit, with hat in tones of mulberry and fox furs; Mrs Brinsden, bottle green suit, fur coat, and hat in tones of purple and wine; Airs Hyde, black ensemble suit, fawn hat ; Airs Nelson, cinnamon brown ensemble suit; Mrs Treweek, black embroidered coat frock, black hat with velvet. Miss Hawley, navy hhie ensemble, hat to tone, and old gold scarf; Mrs Spragg, black satin, gray fur, and black satin hat; Mrs Bnyley, mbric red coat frock and hat en suite; Airs Stanley Mills, pale cinnamon crepe de chine and grey wrap; Miss Jenny Thomson, caramel brown ensemble and cyclamen hat; Mrs .Robert Crow, green velvet and hat to tone; Mrs W. Young, black embroidered suit; Miss Wilson, henna hat, brown fur coat; Airs Williams, grey velour wrap and pale rust hat;, Mrs Vernon, black, .with brown fox furs and black hat."

Hrolessir Iliddet, Mr O’Shea Jenkins, Dr L. K. Crow, and Sir S. Mills were also present at the gathering. '
