monthly council melting The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council; Held yesterday afternoon', was attended by the Chancellor (Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P.), Messrs L. D. Ritchie, J Wallace, J. C. Stephens, J. A. Moore, J. Rennie, J. 0. Thomson, J. S. Douglas, C. Oilray,' J W. Scurr, Professors Bonham and Inglis, and Drs Marshall Mucdoilakl and James Fitzgerald. VISITING PROFESSOR. The Registrar, University of New Zealand, forwarded an itinerary of Professor Blakeslec, who, is visiting Carnegie professor of international relations at the University of New Zealand for 11)27-28. No expense or obligation was involved tc tho University of-New Zealand. . The Chancellor said tho itinerary did not include Otago, as when the previous communication was received the council was under a misapprehension about its obligations. It; was decided to ask that X'rolessor Blakeslee visit Dunedin. CHAIR OF EDUCATION. The Director of Education wrote that tho department was not prepared to recommend any appointment in respect of an assistant to the chair of education, since tho principal and vice-prin-cipal of tho Training College might be required to assist the professor. Mr Wallace contended that the letter was not really a reply to tho council’s representations. It was decided, or. the motion of Dr Macdonald, that tho registrar again draw attention to tho fact that a distinction had been drawn between Otago and the other centres. DENTAL FACULTY. The Dean of tho Dental Faculty wrote. (1) That tho faculty rccom-. mended the appointment of Dr R. 11. Dodds as acting dean; (2) the faculty did not approve of tho use of tho letters i: C.D.S.” (certificated dental surgeon) ; it recommended, however, that tho letters D.S. Dip. might he used to denote dental surgery diploma. . Dr Dodds’s appointment ns acting dean was confirmed, and ;t was decided to ask an opinion about tho question of the use of tho letters “C.D.S.” PROFESSORIAL BOARD. The Registrar for tho Professorial Board forwarded regulations drawn up |in respect of the Waters Prize. The hoard recommended that Mr N. L. lidson no granted three weeks’ leave of absence to visit Australia, and that T. B. Hamilton" be appointed in his place. Tho hoard recommended that Dr Gioy he appointed a member of the Home Science, Faculty. All tho recommendations wore approved. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho Dean of the lloinq Science Faculty asked for two alterations to bo made in letter of April 29 concerning award of home sciciicj bursaries.--Referred to Homo Science Faculty.^ Tho Registrar, University of Now Zealand, stated that the council’s letter concerning appointment of University professors had been received, and the recommendations adopted by tho Otago Council were quite in the spirit of tho procedure laid down by ibo New Zealand University Council.—Received.

Dr Piekorill recommended the appointment of W. G, Middlemans as demonstrator in crown and bridge work. —Approved. Dr Malcolm asked the council to allow the use of a room in the physiology department for research work on foods and nutrition in connection with the Council of Scientific, and Industrial Research. He suggested that a payment of £25 pci' annum he made to the Unlvors!ti .—A ll provod. Miss L. W. Stott, president of the conference ol New Zealand hospital matrons, lunvarduu a resolution urging the eouueil to reconsider its decision regarding the establishment of a postgraduate course.—ft was again decided to point out that it was the question of espouse that had actuated the council in taking the action it had. The Dean of the Homo Science Faculty recommended that the fee lor diploma .students in anatomy in the spring term be £2 12s 6d instead of £1 Us 6d; also that the situation in regard to teaching anatomy, histology, and physiology bo reviewed before next >OJI FINANCE AND MEDICAL. The Finance and Medical Committees reported having conlorrod with Ur Malcolm concerning the appointment of a successor to Dr Muriel Hell. Dr Malcolm made an interesting statement to the committees concerning various matters affecting the school. It was resolved that bo ho asked to put this statement in writing. The council was recommended to advertise the position in Australia, Great Britain, and New Zealand at a salary of £4OO to £SOO, according to qualifications, application to bo made direct to the University of Otago. The report was adopted without dission. HOME SCIENCE BURSARIES. The Finance and Home Science Committees reported:—The Director of Education wrote stating that the department cbuld make no allowance in respect to fees of homo science .students whose bursaries had been cancelled.—-It was resolved that a reply be sent to the department, such reply to be drafted by Air Stephens and tho registrar. The committees considered a letter from the Education Department stating that the department proposed in future that all applications for home science bursaries should be forwarded direct to the department.—lt was resolved that the letter be noted, and the department informed that the matter has been submitted to Professor Strong, and that a copy of her report on the matter be forwarded to the department. Further, that it be suggested that each applicant for a. bursary should in addition to applying to the department forward an application for admission to the registrar. The report was adopted. ECONOMY SOUGHT. The Finance Committee r oported that it had considered the annual statement of the honorary treasurer, and had resolved to recommend the council that a circular letter be sent to individual professors drawing attention to the financial position, and asking them to make any suggestions as to , possible economies in their respective departments, and that a copy of the circular ho also sent to the Professorial Board. It was further resolved that a request should lie made to Canterbury College ns to its method of budgeting for the various departments. Further consideration of the report was then held over till next meeting. The report was adopted.

HOSPITAL APPOINTMENTS. The joint Hospital Committees recommended ! In view of tho fact that a senior officer is now appointed at Caversham Chronic Hospital and another at Wakari, and also tho services of the resident specialist officer are only required to a limited extent, the senior resident surgical officer undertake the duties of both senior surgical officer and senior specialist officer at the Dunedin Hospital. . . The senior resident physician and tno senior resident surgeon be paid, a salary at tho rat© of £6' v ' per annum each independent Of any seniority bonus to the chief resident, such sa r p?7 not to come into force until 19-8. Joe Otago University Council has agreed to contribute half of the salary of each appointment, not to exceed £2oO per annum each, provided that (a) the Senior resident medical officer acts as medical tutor, and (b) that the senior resident surgical officer acts as surgical tutor. . . , The appointment of senior surgical officer ho advertised in Great Britain and New Zealand, duties to be taken up on March, 1928. . f In consequence of tho resignation of Dr E. J. O’Neill, Dr Newiands be appointed to tho vacancy as honorary suigeon on tho honorary visiting stall. Dunedin Hospital, subject to approval thereof bv Mr F. Gordon Beil, Chief of Service. Tho medical superintendent and the chief of surgical services (Mr F. Gordon Bell have been requested to report as to any other reorganisation required on the honorary visiting staff. _ Tho proposed action of Otago university Council to appoint Dr S. B. W. Strain as temporary tutor m aniesthotics on account of tho resignation of Dr Marshall bo approved. Two pupil dietitians bo appointed to the Dunedin Hospital when tho new kitchen and diet block is in use, such pupils to be graduates of tho Otago University Homo Science School, no salary to he paid, but pupils to ho accommodated with hoard and lodging and washing in tho nurses’ home, wherein they will rank as _ certificated nurses. The period of training to ho for six months, at tho end of which time the board will issue a certificate should tho trainees he considered duly qualified for such.
