DETECTIVE SHOT AT
AN AUCKLAND SENSATION “THOUGHT THEY WERE POTTIHO HIM IH ASYLUM" [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, June 14. A sensational affair took place about midday to-day in a house in the Great South road, Ellerslie. Detective Nalder and Acting-detective Power had occasion to interview a man named Athol George Beamish White. It is understood that when both officers went into the room White picked up a gun and shot at Rower, the bullet narrowly missing him. Detective Nalder immediately seized White, and took him to the City Police Station, where he was charged with attempting to murder Orme Snow Wilson Power. White, wiio is twenty-five years of age, appeared before Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., at tho P.olice Court this afternoon, and Chief-detective Cummings asked for a remand until tomorrow, which was granted. White then said: “I thought ho was trying to put me back in tho asylum. That’s why I tried to murder him. That’s as good as murdering me, to put mo back in the asylum.” The Magistrated asked accused to repeat this statement, and advised the clerk of the court and the chief detective to take a note of what White said. White did so, and all that he said was transferred to paper.
