Though the wicket was somewhat worn, it played truly enough, and consequently the New Zealanders’ display was a great disappointment. Blunt played*a restrained and confident game, but Lowry fiiStd to settle down. Ho attempted ono big hit, but mistimed it so badly that he fell back on the defensive game. M'Girr and Dacre established a partnership which promised for a while to save the game. M'Girr, who realised his responsibility, batted especially well, and was full of confidence. He scored 11 from one of Jupp’s overs. Dacre hit a sixer, and then fell to a shooter.

The batting after lunch was rather scratchy. Northants's bowling was steady. The bowlers kept a length, ami .sometimes got work on the ball, but this did not account for the New Zealanders poor showing. The match will long bo remembered
