FRENCH COAL EMBARGO

Questioned regarding the embargo on the importation of coal in France, Mr A. M. Samuel (Parliamentary Secretary of tho Department of Overseas Trade) said that a decree issued on May 25 prohibited the importation into France from June 1 of coal, coke, lignite, and patent fuel, except under license; but a genera) license had been issued for the importation of coal for cokeing plants. The operation of the decree was subsequently postponed until Juno 10. The British ’Ambassador had made strong representations against the measure, a.,d had specially urged that existing contracts should be respected.
