LOCAL AND GENERAL
When the case of Donald David Wilson. veterinary surgeon, Hamilton, versus Montague Mailing, bank manager, j Hamilton, in an action lor £6OO for alleged slander, was called in the Hamilton Supremo Court yesterday (says a Press Association message), counsel lor , the plaintiff took leave to withdraw the case. Defendant’s solicitor opposed the withdrawal, as defendant still denied the slander. Plaintiff therefore consented to judgment, with costs amounting to £23 2s. A large quantity of stolon property, which has been missing for some week, has now been located beneath the floorinf of the Grcymouth Town Hall. Re-' cently there were three burglaries, £l4O ; worth of goods being taken from a house, £7O worth of carpets and rugsfrom a. shop, and £2O worth of tools from a residence. There has also been a number of minor burglaries. No arrest has yet been made. j The position of the Mayor of Napier ' is at present in doubt in view of tho 1 passing for payment by the council of an account to a company in which the mayor (Mr J. Vigor Brown) is a shareholder. The council’s debt was incurred prior to the closing of nominations for. the last election, but the account fas passed at the meeting after the election at which Mr Brown presided. The mayor has since disposed of his shares in the company concerned, and paid them the amount of the council’s account, and the company in turn has made a refund to tho council. As it is not clear whether the refund and the disposal of the shares wijl have the effefet of making the mayor? action legal, Mr Brown vacated the chair at this week’s meeting of the council pending advice from the borough solicitors, who are to be asked for an opinion. Mr Brown is also consulting his advisers.—Press Association.
