TAIERI COMES TO TOWN

FARMERS SUPPLEMENT PSPPY DAY TOWS GREAT SALE .. Taieri ladies who came to Dunedin for Poppy Day were impressed with the importance of the appeal by the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and , had their sympathy aroused by the activity with which the work was carried on. Hence the thought occurred to them that something more than the selling and buying of poppies might be done by Taieri in support of this very deserving cause. Conversation on the subject led to organising and a canvass of the district. and the outcome is seen to-day in the great sale of farm produce at the old Art Gallery in Cumberland street. The purpose is to reinforce the Poppy Dav funds, and thus supply more money with which ’to employ returned soldiers who need the work. Once before the Taieri made a splendid effort of a similar nature. It was at the time when the British Empire j responded to the Belgian “ S.O.S. Something, like £9OO was realised on that occasion. What the proceeds will bo to-day could not be even guessed at the time of writing, but if the Dunedin people even faintly recognise the scope of the enterprise the result should be well worth while. , _ . . Canvassers report that the, Taieri men and their wives have contributed willingly and most generously, and of this there was ample evidence in the hall earlv this morning. Goods were being received from Henley,, Momona, Berwick. Wincatui. Mosgiol, and all parts of the Taieri County. Fifty, or sixty tons of potatoes made a big show, flanked by an abundance of wheat, oats and other field produce; and on the tables were set out a great and diverse stock of cakes, scones, jams, poultry, sweets, vegetables, fruit, etc.; whilst a lot of firewood tempted one man to get in early with a satisfactory order for "no big nnrccl. , When Taieri sets out in earnest to do a thing it always docs it well, and this is one of tho purposes on winch it has set its heart. „ It is therefore up to Dunedin to_ answer the call. People need not he timid if their means are slender. Purchasers of small amounts are welcome. But the sale is also on such an esten .tve scale as to appeal to buyers who wise to lav up big stocks for the winter, and this ‘gives them the opportunity to do *-homselves a good turn and at the samy time help a cause teh merits of which nre undeniable —the pause of a helping hand towards men who acted promptly our defence when all that we vahm was in peril.
