STUDENTS ARRESTED
“RAG" OH RAILWAY STATION »* EDUCATED LARRIKINS,” SAYS STATION MASTER [Special to the * Stab.’] CHRISTCHURCH, April 14. The Otago and Canterbury students left for Auckland last night to take part in the Easter tournament. A largo number of local students assembled on the station to farewell their own team and to welcome the southerners. The gathering was lively, and not without incident. After the departure of the Canterbury team by the early train the students indulged in their usual “ crocodiles,” chorus .work, and hakas. The policeman on duty on the station took action, and one or two students, picked at random, were marched off the station with instructions not to return. This raised the enthusiasm of the student party rather than quelled it, so the station master, accompanied by the policeman, marched down the platform. The man in bine suddenly accosted one student, who was alleged to be one of those marched off, and this student was taken in charge. A lengthy argument ensued on the station, the policeman and his captive being surrounded by a voluble collection or students. Another policeman arrived, and contributed to tho comedy by grabbing another student, who unwisely passed humorous comment on the situation in full view of the forces of the law. The two arrested students were then hustled off the station and taken away in a taxi to the accompaniment of ironical cheers.
Nevertheless, the welcome given to the Otago students was not less hearty. “ It’s a positive disgrace,” said the station master (Mr H. S. Lowry) .when asked if he would like to comment on the situation. “They are nothing but a lot of educated larrikins. It means I shall have to close the platform on such occasions if it does not stop.” " It is understood that the police took action at the request of the station authorities. PROCEEDINGS BY SUMMONS. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 14. The police state that the two college students taken to police headquarters last evening as tho result of a lively scene on the railway station will be charged later on summons. They did not spend the night in the cells.
