Hon. K. A. Wright Minister of Education, will return to Dunedin on Friday night and will be staying at tho Grand Hotel. Mr James MacDonald, formerly assistant general manager of the New Zealand Railways, was a passenger from Invercargill by the through express this morning, being cn route to Ashburton. , , , , Mr L. C. Stephens left by this morning’s express on bis way to take up post graduate studies in electrical engineering at Rugby, England. Hon. D. T. Fleming arrived from Balclutba this morning on a short visit. Mr W. J. Hcslehurst, advertising manager of the ‘Lyttelton Times’ and ‘Christchurch Star,’_ who has been in Dunedin in connection with the campaign for the encouragement of New Zealand secondary industries, returned north this morning. Tho many friends of the Rev. John Perkins, vicar at Balclutha for a number of years, but recently transferred to a parish on the West Coast, will learn with regret that lie is in tho Dunedin Hospital and has had to undergo an operation. Tho latest advice concerning the Hon. D. H. Guthrie, who is lying seriously ill at tho residence of his daughter, MrsAllan Evans. Mastcrton, is that there is no change in his condition. —Press Association. . . Mr Owen N. Campbell, chief land drainage engineer of the Lauds and Survey Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr 11. J. Lowe as Commissioner for Crown Lands and Chief Survevor of tho North Auckland Land District. Sir Harold Beauchamp and Mr Owen Nicholson have been reappointed by the Government as directors of the Bank of Now Zealand.—Press Association. A striking illustration of the characteristic Dunedin attitude towards those whom our citizens regard as friends was given yesterday, when about a score of men gathered at the Commercial Travellers’ Club to express to Mr W. Gathoridgc their goodwill as well as their regret at his departure from this city. Mr Gatheridge, _ during his two and a-half years’ sojourn in Dunedin, has made many friends, particularly in tho musical world, and his removal to Wellington is regarded as a distinct loss to the community. These sentiments were expressed in feeling terms by Mr H. F. Nees (who presided at the happy little function), Mr J. Cameron, Air G. A. Wycherley, Mr S. G. Angell. Mr A. Smcllic, and Mr R. Bryant. Mr Cameron, on behalf of those assembled, presented Mr Gatheridge with a smoker’s stand, and Mr Angell added a pipe as a memento from the Idlers’ Quartet Party, of which the guest was a valued member. Numerous toasts were drunk, including those of the guest, the Idlers’ Quartet, and Mrs and Miss Gatheridge. A pleasing programme of musical items was contributed by Messrs R. G. Angell, B-. Bryant, C. Scott, A. Smellie, J. 1). M'Kcchnic, C. Price, A. Watson, G. A. Wycherley, J. Cameron, and the Idlers’ Quartet. Tho proceedings ended with the singing of the Orphans’ Club’s closing ode, ‘ Auld Lang Syne,’ ‘ Will Ye No’ Come Back Again,’ and the National Anthem. Mr Gatheridge, who eloquently expressed his thanks for tho tokens of friendship and goodwill, leaves Dunedin by the second express on Thursday. The death is announced of Mr A. H. Atkinson, who had been municipal gas engineer since 3019. He lived formerly in Auckland and in many other parts 6f New Zealand.—Blenhcmi P.A. telegram.
