MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

POLLING BAY OH APRIL 27

POSSIBLE AND PROBABLE CANDIDATES

Members of the City Council, Harbor Board, and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board have nearly completed their term of office, and in a few weeks the citizens eligible to vote will bo called upon to exercise their right of franchise in selecting members for these bodies for the next two years. A number of candidates have definitely announced their intention to contest the election, and rumors of other aspirants for municipal honors are heard on all sides.

At present it does not seem that the question of filling tho mayoral chair in the place of Mr H. I/. Tapley, M.P., will trouble the minds of the public. The deputy-mayor (Cr W. B. -Taverner), who for some years has been the chairman of the Finance Committee of the City Council, some weeks ago defiiitely announced his intention of seeking the mayoral office, and so far he is the only one. It is reported that Mr 11. S. Black, who was approached by a number of citizens on tho subject, may also be an aspirant for mayoral honors, but it will probably bo found that in the end ho will stand as a candidate for the council. If he does come out against Cr Taverner the Labor Party ,will probably nominate a candidate. and make a three-cornered contest.

Great interest will probably be aroused in the election of city councillors, the present indication being that there will be a large number of candidates. The present council comprises Crs J. J. Clark, W. Begg, -T. S. Douglas, J. E MacManus, J. Wilson, J. B. Shaddock. W. B. Taverner. J. H. Hancock. C. H. Hayward, D. Larnach, W. A. Scott, and E. Sincock. Of that number Cr Taverner is contesting the myoralty, and Cr MacManus is retiring through illness; hut the other ten will, it is understood, all seek re-elec-tion a,s councillors. The Labor Party again has a “ticket” of candidates for the council, these being Messrs J. Robinson. W. W. Batchelor, G. Geddes, J. Gilchrist, R. Harrison, P. C. Triggs, and J. W. Munro. Another candidate is Mr J. J. Marlow, an ex-mayor and councillor, and the names of Messrs H. C. Campbell and A. E. Anscll have been mentioned as those of likely candidates. The majority of the present members of the Otago Harbor Board arc likely to seek re-election. Messrs Munro, Geddes, and Harrison have been nominated by the Labor Party as candidates for that body. , Mrs Marshall Macdonald, the only lady member of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, is not seeking re-election, hut most of the other sitting members will probably go to the poll. The Labor Party nominees for this body are Messrs Triggs S. J. Elston, and Gilchrist. Disappointment has been expressed that Mrs Herbert was not elected by the Labor Party to seek a seat on the Hospital Board, as many who do not altogether subscribe to her political views think that she would he a desirable member. The name of Mrs Walter Ross has been mentioned as a candidate, and it is likely that she will be found on the list when nominations close. It is also reported that Miss Rnnciman may he a candidate. _ The Citizens’ League will again nominate a “ticket” for tho_ three bodies. A meeting of its executive uas held the other day, hub Kfi far nothing definite has been done in selecting candidates. This will probably bo done in about a fortnight. . , T . , The date of the elections is Wednesday, April 27. The main roll of electors’ has been closed, and names are now being received for the supplementary roll,' which will bo closed at 5 o’clock this afternoon.
