BURNS CLUB
THE ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Dunedin Burns Club states:— Tho committee, in presenting the thirty-sixth annual report and balancesheet, regrets that the membership shows a decided falling off. The unsettled conditions following the Exhibition may be somewhat accountable for this. The committee trusts that the incoming year will see the club .bock to the old standard. The membership now is 280 double and 122 single. The finances of the club continue to; be in a satisfactory condition, there being invested in deposits and debentures the sum of £650 12s 4d. Monthly, meetings are extremely well received. The committee thanks the members for their loyal support. The standard of the programmes has been well maintained. . The annual social was held this year in Juno, and .was a great success, giving members an opportunity of social intercourse with old friends. At the August meeting Dr Marshall M'Donald gave an address on ‘Sir Walter Scott,’ and at tho October meeting Mr TV. H. Brngh spoke on ‘Travels in the Burns Country.’ The club celebrated the ancient festival of Hallowe’en in timehonored fashion, the function taking the form of a Scottish kitchen scene. The entertainment was a huge success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by a very largo audience. The financial result was also very gratifying. The popularity of the anniversary gathering was again demonstrated by the largo audience that assembled at His Majesty’s Theatre. The programme was an outstanding one and every item was enthusiastically received. The address on this occasion was delivered by Mr W. R. Brngh, who treated his subject (‘The Scotland of Burns ’) in a very able and interesting manner. During tho year a meeting of representatives of tho various Scottish societies was held, when it was decided to form a federation of Scottish societies, the aim being to bring tho different societies closer together. The committee approved of the constitution, and became affiliated.
