His Excellency the GovernorGeneral (Sir Charles Fergusson), who was accompanied by Captain Wentworth (aide-de-camp), concluded his tour of the Maniototo County on Saturday evening, and later on he attended a Masonic function at Nasoby. He left for Oaraaru at ,1.30 p.m. yesterday. An his car was leaving Naseby Sir Charles Fergusson encountered a lino of children and adults, and alighted for a few minutes to bid them farewell. On approaching the hospital ho met some nurses armed with cameras. He courteously alighted again and posed for a photograph. He then motored to Oamaru, where ho will remain till to-morrow. , The Prime Minister (Right Hon. JG. Coates), Mrs Coates, the Minister of Public Works (Hon. K. S. Williams), and Mrs Williams will leave Dunedin by the first express to-mor-row for Christchurch. En route the party will make a stay at limaru, where the Ministers will meet the farmers in regard to the wheat situation. They will proceed to Christchurch by the second express, and leave for Wellington on Wednesday night. The Rev. Dr Gibb, who has been on a visit to Southland, arrived in Dunedin by the first express on Saturday. Pie will leave for the north to-morrow. News reached the local China Inland Mission Office on Saturday that, amongst others, Mr W. Anderson, ot Stirling, and Mr and Mrs H. Curtis, of Christchurch, had safely reached Shanghai about a fortnight ago. Mr Thomas Gunnion and Mr G. J 3. Cartwright will be candidates for the mayoralty of Tera’uka at the forthcoming election. , Miss Rita Paterson, daughter of Mr and Mrs T. D. B. Paterson, 65 Grendon street, Maori Hill, having qualified as a dental nurse, has been appointed by the Government to open and take charge of the dental clinic at Balcltitha. Nurse Paterson arrives at Balclutha to-day. The popularity of Mr W. D. Wallace (Official Assignee and Registrar of the Supreme Court of Invercargill), who has received notice of his transfer to Dunedin, where he will be engaged in similar duties, was demonstrated on Saturday morning, when he was met by the magistrate (Mr G. Cruickshank) and his fellow-clerks and presented with an attache case and a set of table silver for Mrs Wallace. Mr Cruickshank. in making the presentation, referred to the efficient manner in which Mr Wallace had performed his duties, and wished him success in his new position.

A Wanganui message states that Mr Edward Ilayney Jackson, senior partner of the firm of stock and station agents, F. 11. Jackson, and Co., died on Saturday evening, aged fifty-eight. He was well known in business and pastoral circles all over the dominion. Mr 11. 0. Talbot, New Zealand inspector for the Phoenix Assurance Company, is at present in _ Dunedin, and is staying at the Excelsior Hotel. Mr W. R. Hayward left this morning for Wellington. Mr 11. L. Smith (P. Hayman and Co.) was a passenger for Wellington hy the 11.30 train to-day. Mr F. Johnson, of the Department of Industries and Commerce, went north thus morning, hound for Wellington. Major Bell left for the north by the second express to-day. Mr W. D. Hunt (Wright, Stephen son, and Co.) left for Wellington this morning. The directors of Chas. Bcgg and Co. —Messrs C. Wiley (Sydney). Mr J. J. Marlow has consented to stand for the City Conned next month. When in the council previously he was chairman bf the E.P. and L. Committee. Prior to that he was mayor of St. Hilda, served in the_ South Dunedin Council, and was for sixteen-years on the Drainage Board. Our Christchurch correspondent telegraphs that the death is announced from London of Mr Gerard de Vries, who was well known in Christchurch. Mr l)e Vries was associated with the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company for the last thirty years in New Zealand. He was connected with a branch of the company’s business, and left this country prior to the outbreak of war to take up residence in London. During the war Mr De Vries was very well known to numbers of New Zealand soldiers through his kindness and hospitality during their stay in London. A Sydney cablegram announces the death (suddenly), following an operation, of Professor Anstruther Lawson (professor of botany at Sydney University).
