« 1 —HK" "' ' DROWNED. The body of Thomas MTvcnna, who ivns drowned in the Wanganui River on December C, has been recovered a mile below the scene of the fatality. At the inquest a verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally drowned. David Hyndinan, aged twenty-six, single, a waterside worker, was drowned at 3.45 p.m. yesterday in the Cobden Lagoon, across which ho was attempting to swim wearing his trousers. W lion nearly '-.cross he disappeared, and other swimmers dived without being able to reach him. Later boats were brought, the body being recovered at 8 p.m. Deceased was known as a good swimmer, and tho accident is difficult to -explain.—Greymonth message. A LUCKY ESCAPE. The railway crossing a short distance north of the Rata station was the scene of an accident this morning, when a motor lorry, driven by Ernest Pickford, married, a farmer, ran into the south-bound Auckland express. The lorry was badly smashed. Pick ford, who was hurled clear, had a remarkable escape, sustaining head injuries. Ho is expected to make a good recovery.
