Vickerman, the “father ” of New Zealand shipmasters, went ashore last week, after serving the sea for well over fifty-nine years, fifty of which have been spent on the New Zealand coast in the Anchor Line boats. Captain Vickerman is the eldest surviving son of the late Dr F. L. Vickerman, who arrived by the Kelso in 1847, and settled in the Wairau, subsequently moving to Nelson, where he resumed practice of his profession. In 1867 Captain Vickerman joined the ship Cissy_ as an apprentice, and served in various vessels, and finally, after passing the Board of

Trade examination, returned to Nelson and joined the old Charles Edward, then a paddle wheeler, square rigged on the forecastle, as second mate. Promotion came, and his first command was the Murray, a beautifully modelled clipper-bowed vessel that on a wind sailed as fast as the steamers, and with the' aid of her canvas would keep a course in the very worst of weather, and it blew just as hard then as it does now. During his sailing ship days Captain Vickerman was second officer in the Collingrove, running fast passages to Adelaide. The Collingrove was under the command of the famous Captain Angel, who was renowned for safe seamanship. He passed on the secret to his second mate, whose years of sea service have been free from disaster in any shape or form. Among his recent experiences was the picking up of the captain and crew of the Port Kembla after that vessel had sunk off Farewell, after striking a mine laid by the German warship Wolf. Captain Vickerman has retired at his own request, and intends to live on his property at Pangatotara, Motueka. lONIC PROM HOME.
