HASHISH SMUGGLERS
CORRUPT NATIVE OFFICIALS OF EGYPT. Revelations of corruption in the public services, from, which British officials have been withdrawn during the last few_ years, have aroused great indignation in Cairo. Tno latest instance, which has caused a considerable sensation, is the discovery that an organisation of provincial police officers has been conducting an extensive and lucrative traffic in smuggling hashish from the seaports to the Interior. . There is a great demand for this drug in Egypt, where, like opium in China, it is esteemed for its narcotic properties. It is difficult do smuggle owing to its distinctive smell. It was this smell which betrayed the last smuggling gang. The landlord of a village inn, whore the police officer who smuggled the drug stayed, noticed an unusual odor from two heavy trunks, the property of his visitor. The trunks, when opened, were found to bo full of hashish.
