AUSTRALIAN TRADE ALARMED INCREASED DUTIES WANTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copying hi MELBOURNE, December 14. (Received December 14, at 11.30 a.m.) A deputation representing the Australian Dairy Council, the Victorian Farmers’ Union, and the Primary Producers’ Union of New .South Wales waited upon the Minister of Customs (Mr Pratten) and the Minister of Markets (Mr Paterson), and asked that immediate action should he taken in connection with the largo imports of butter into the Commonwealth from New Zealand. The speakers urged that the duties on butter and cheese irom that country should be increased to meet the position. Mr Pratten, in reply, said that before any additional tariff could lie considered by the Government would have to go before the Tariff Board for inquiry and report. Then, oven if Parliament agreed to an alteration in the duty, under the terms of the treaty with New Zealand, six months’ notice would have to be given the New Zealand Government of the suggested alteration.
Mr Paterson promised to get into touch with the Dairy Produce Export Control Board to see if anything could be done to alleviate the position.
