PRISONERS SENTENCED

CHRISTCHURCH, November 18. William Watts, aged seventy-five years, on three charges of assault on boys, was sentenced to ten years at the criminal sitting of tho Supreme Court today. Edward Mahoney,_ found guilty of receiving goods knowing that they had been dishonestly obtained, was sentenced to eighteen moiitlis’ imprisonment. His Honor said that Mahoney was on probation for forgery, and needed a sharper lesson. Harry Percy llentoul Ramsbottom Ishenvood, found guilty of an indecent assault, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Cecil Jarden, aged seventeen, guilty of carnal knowledge of a girl of fourteen, was admitted to probation for two years. A plea of not guilty made by Giffen Murphy, tnxiclriver, when charged with having, on September 23 last, driven a motor car negligently at the corner of Armagh street and Barbadoes street, so as to cause the death of Francis James Holland. Tho jury returned a verdict of guilty, and sentence was deferred. William Francis Halliburton pleaded guilty to having received £152 18s lid from Garrett Fitzgerald, and to having fraudulently omitted to account for the money to ‘the Christchurch property trustees; also to having stolen suras of £244 8s and £250 7s lid belonging to Mrs Mary S. M'Arthur. The offences were committed at Ashburton, where Tlrjiiburton was in business as a commission agent. His Honor said that it seemed desirable to give Halliburton an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. His Honor would allow the case to stand over until Monday in order that further inquiries should be made.
